MK1 VW Golf GTI

MK1 VW Golf GTI
An old man keeps a few classic cars in storage on our farm and he's got some real vintage beauties but out of the lot this one is right up my street and probably most of yours! A standard MK1 Golf GTI... not many of these about? Oh... and less than 16k miles on the clock and has been off the road for 8 years.
God knows how people source things out like this? I guess right place right time....?

I had one the same when I was 18. Still remember the Reg VSS 7X
I wanted a black one at the time, but they were always the most tired ones. Mine was Mars red and for some reason it always seemed to be easier to buy a clean red one.
I'd probably still have it now if my mate hadn't written it off! When either of us were bored with the car we'd sell it to each other.
One of my favourite handling cars ever.

Realistically it probably is worth £20-25k if cleaned up. I bet it's one of the lowest mileage and most sound mk1 GTI's in the country. I didn't look closely but there didn't appear to be any rust on it and it's all original, even down to the 'Wolfsburg' mudflaps. I did a bit of research and it's one of the very first being registered in 1980 and having the 1.6litre engine compared to the 1.8litre which they got in 1982. A true collectors car; lucky guy!

When I sat in it I did actually look in the glove box out of curiosity . Completely clean inside with a very smart leather disabled badge holder thingy . The back seats have a blanket laid over them LOL.

Nice; One thing about mk1 GTis and storage though...K-Jetronic and modern fuel.
Ethanol (all modern petrol contains ethanol ) doesn't do the metering units on these any good when stored.
Once its been rebuilt with seals that can handle it it should be fine though, just need to make sure the tank and fuel lines don't rust from the inside out (ethanol attracts water) and the rubber parts (hoses) don't perish and go porous...we keep getting this with a Merc 500SEC running the same K-jetronic system (rebuilt) that does a few hundred miles a year....its killed three fuel pumps (genuine Bosch) in the space of 2 years - they just rust up and seize!

Well it's still here. The guy has had it recomissioned and it's now MOT'd and Taxed for the first time in 8 years. He's given it a clean and polish and put 500 miles on it going down to Cornwall in it. He said he may sell it in 18 months time once he's enjoyed it a bit. I'll be the first to know; I can only dream though eh? I really can't get over this car for some reason.

I just love them, now the WRX has gone my MK1 Golf is my daily been driving it the last couple of days and really enjoy it, ok it's not a GTI but it's still fun to drive.
I put the word out that I'm after some parts and I now have another one to go and look at in the next week or so, also spotted what looks to be a GTI in someones garden yesterday, it's got the badges etc but it's difficult to be sure because loads of people dress them up to look like GTI's (a bit like the wrx / sti thing) didn't have time to stop and look so it's on my to do list next week, the thing I want most is the seats and interior out of one as mine are goosed but it's proving difficult at the moment.
Just been to a local bodyshop to see about having the new rear arches welded in £100 a side so I think I'll be having that done in the next month or so when he can fit me in.

Yeah it seems to have been one of the slightly less popular colours, although I'm living in the former Yugoslavia and they used to make them down the road TAS, so there's still some on the road here but they are slowly becoming fewer and further between. Mine seems to be a West German one that came in via Italy, I wasn't too keen on the colour at first and planned to change it to light blue but it's grown on me and I think I'll keep it as is.
Found a quad headlight grill and a centre console for it, just need to see if the guy that has them is going to be sensible about the price, still not found a set of seats I'm happy with the condition of but there's no rush so I shall bide my time until the right set comes along.

Pirelli P slots with Pirelli tyres fitted. I don't like them personally but i keep them incase i ever sell it to keep it original.
Yes i'm not keen in the mirrors or the single wiper conversion, both carried out by previous owners. I have sourced a set of genuine mirrors and will fit them one day but it will then require paint. I'd also like to change it back to dual wipers one day.
