I think you will get a squillion answers but what I did when I bought a car that smelt of smoke was...
Opened the window 2 inches left the engine running and had the hot blower on full for 10 minutes. (old army trick used to clear a vehicle of bad gasses, including human ones)
I got the seats and carpets done by the polish with there shampoo hoover thingy.
Its been fine since

another method is to soak two towels in white vinegar and leave them in the car over night or longer if poss. (one in the front, one in the back, in a container of some sort!!!) like atupperware or small ice cream tub!!!
distilled white vinegar is better, if you can find it!!

fill a bowl with vinegar and leave in car overnight, sounds stupid but does work, for some reason it attracts smoke odours.
used it in 1 of my old cars that smelt of smoke worked a treat and is cheap.

Another option, if the roof lining is dirty is to use CIF bathroom mousse. Seriously* spray on, rub in and then wipe over with a dmap cloth to take the muck out. Leaves the car all lemony fresh too.
