Until this weekend ... was warm ( albeit on full hot temp setting ), but on idling vents all went cold!

So finally removed oil/water separator / catch can to access hoses into heater matrix ... removed both and no dripping .. ( guess the engine bay end of these heater core hoses are above all the heater core? Or core was blocked / air locked??) . Flushed through, and got a lot of orange water ( rust? ) out, ran until it became clean water out. Boxed it all up again and checked water reservoir, was fine.

Ran engine on idle, once warmed up the heater seemed to be working normally again! Few miles run, no leaks and heater seemed to be working fine!!

Didn't change thermostat ( I had bought a new one ) nor drain / flush main cooling system / radiator, likely do that later, nor use new antifreeze etc. but seems like it was a silly problem of air lock or blockage in heater core.

Let's see how it goes for a few days.

Proper coolant change will be done shortly!!

V

Do a full coolant change & flush and see how it goes, Last time i saw this the liners had cracked

Cheers Rob, Matt-C,

Thermostat has been mentioned, so I bought a genuine Subaru one ( current one is a lower temp opening one ) and some proper OAT anti freeze.
I was trying the quicker easier jobs first. Flush and thermostat next just need to sort ramps to get under and drop the undertray!

Any suggestions for best way to flush the whole coolant system, not just drain the radiator?

Rob - hope not!!! Block was new and has bore inserts care of ASP, about 50k miles ago, cossie head gaskets I think, head studs, RCM oil pan anti surge plate, etc.!!

Has anyone changed any of their bulbs on their Sti hatch to LED ones, as an example one of my reg plate light bulbs needs replacing, whilst it needs replacing i may start putting LED bulbs in. I came across this link on google, ive not used them before so have no idea if they are any good or not, if anyone else has any links to LED or uprated bulbs websites feel free to post them

They dont. i went through a couple of cheap chinese (amazon/ebay) sets on the sidelights that did flicker before i just bought the Halfords ones and they've never flickered (lifetime warranty also on them at the time). Nor do the Ring ones. id advise buying branded rather than cheap chinese knock offs

also your car doesnt have any funky CMOS

Back in 2012 I fitted these "angel eyes" to my saloon.....

and run them as DRL's.
They were brighter than the OEM side lights, so had to upgrade them to LEDs as well.
along with all cabin interior lights.
Even the rears are now all LED (2017)

That looks superb Don, i think anyone that has an older Subaru should replace any bulb that has failed with LED's wherever possible, it doesn't make much sense putting in the old stock dim bulbs anymore.

anyone had any luck fitting aftermarket power steering pumps, or managed to find somewhere that reconditions them?

my pump is knackered making all sorts of noises when cold (its not the top O-ring ive tried that & the rest already) so now looking at replacement pumps - ideally wanted genuine but guts of £500 (£900 from dealer!) has me looking at other aftermarket suppliers - but questioning the quality of them
