guys, im looking to improve my headlights since my local council has gone to these shi**y led street lights with no peripheral lighting
I have read on here that dipped beam are hid but main beam isn't is this correct ?
anyway can anyone recommend an upgrade ? I wud like to upgrade both bulbs as im driving in Europe next year on unknown/unlit roads with no cats eyes, and want the best possible lighting for poor conditions, thanks in advance, chris fattaff
oh yeah I have also had headlights polished to remove yellowing/aging

I recently did this on my hawk Sti!
The dip beam are DS2 bulbs, the oem ones and standard Philips bulbs, I replaced them with Osram night breaker unlimited, massive difference in brightness and a cool white colour.

The full beam is a halogen HB3 bulb, I replaced it with the matching Osram Night Breaker and again defiantly an improvement with a lot more light on the road. But more of a standard colour compared to the ds2 xenon bulbs.

One thing I will warn you about is due to the high cost of xenon bulbs there is a lot of fake ds2 bulbs on eBay and such like so best bet to buy them from the manufacture web site.

I was toying with the idea of piaa bulbs(wallet busting super whites) my mate has them on his audi and loves them but they r £35 each, I might check if compatible with hawk, but I have seen those osram advertised , I might try my local m/factor, thanks fella

AFAIK, there aren't yet upgraded bulbs for HID? A DS2 bulb is an HID.

Unless you two know different?

So, if you have HID dips, they should be good enough...are they properly aligned, as in pointing in the right direction?

As for mains, yes, look for some upgraded bulbs, Philips, Osram, Ring, Halfords all do them.

If looking at HID, however, bear in mind that OE bulbs are 4300K. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that as this number, called the colour temperature, increases, so does the light output. It's actually the reverse.

4300K is daylight/sunshine and the brightest bulb available.
5000K is daylight cloud, second brightest.
6000K is overcast
8000K is so blue as to have lost enough light to make it less bright than a decent halogen.
10,000K and 12,000K are "Yes, officer..." bulbs. Useless except for shows.

PS: the blue/purple colours seen from HID lights in some views is due to the action of the fresnel prism that focuses the light.

The oem Philips ds2 were good, but there nowhere near as bright as the replacement Osram bulbs! So there must of been some advances in ds2 bulb technology in the past 9 or so years since my car was made.

These were the ones i fitted.
