Engine won't start after changing the timing belt
I changed my timing belt last night and put it all back together tonight, went to start it and it just turns over and over with no life!
I am guessing i got the timing wrong! I just checked over the pics on another thread of how to time the engine and the crank is in a different position to what i thought.
I have set it up with the little arrow on the crank pulley facing directly upwards so that it meets the white line on the timing belt (the logical way to do it!)
But when i looked at the pics more carefully it looks as though the arrow sits at 90 degrees to the right........
Does anyone know exactly where the small arrow should face?

the crank pulley with the arrow on sits at 90degrees to the right and the small line is the one you use to line it all up, that should of been apparent when looking at the timing makes on the cam pulleys , hope this picture helps (borrowed from jgm hope you don't mind)

will i have done any damage with the timing being 90 degrees out? is it enough to make contact between the pistons and the valves?
I did do a full rotation by hand to make sure i did not get any contact......

i would imagine that if managed to do a full turn with no contact then you should just get away with it, the only real way to tell is to put the belt on properly and hope for the best

i repaired an impreza not to long ago that would not start after timing belt fitment, they had somehow broken a pick up tooth from the crank sproket causing it not to fire

Can i pop this thread to the top and hi-jack it.
Do you line it up with the line and not the arrow?.
I assume that when the arrow lines up with the mark on the oil pump, piston one is at tdc, then move it 45 degrees clockwise to the line, and put the timing belt on???

I've done this very same thing. The green arrow is confusing. Just ignore it.
There is another line on the toothed crank timing pulley. It's that one that you have to line up with the mark on the oil pump.
When I made this mistake there was no damage.
Car fired up first time once I'd done it right.

Hmm, i know about that. The issue is that the crank has been rotated whilst the belt/heads were off.
I've put it all back together, with the line, lined up on the oil pump, but it won't start, and has soaked the plugs with petrol.
My guess is that the crank timing mark is 180 degrees out.
If i line the arrow up so that no 1 piston is at TDC, then rotate it to the line that should be okay, and a true TDC?

if the bottom end was rotated with heads off and the crank pulley line is now lined up with the pump then it is all aligned correct.. you cannot be 180deg out if the line is correct..
check the timing pickup is still on the crank pulled and the cam wheels..
also check you have the cam wheels in the right position.. ie. left and right as sat in the car not looking at them.
also worst still is the exhaust and inlet cams will fit in the wrong positions.

I managed to work that out last night, it's sometimes amazing how hard something is to comprehend, until you see it and test it!!
