Also, if I have an extra large exhaust on the back, will dropping it lower be necessary to fit the towbar?

You didn't say what socket your fitting, you get various types. As you were talking about control box I got feeling you were fitting 12s which supplies power to trailer only when car is running to power accessories and a few other extras like reverse light supply and car cut.
12n is standard lights only socket.
If your using new trailer there is updated combined 13 pin socket.
Most tow bars I have fitted to various models of subaru relocate rear left exhaust hanger.
