Things to do / know before remap
Hi all
I have a relatively standard Turbo 2000. It has an HKS mushroom and a 3" catback (both on it when I got it 8 years ago). The engine has done 73k miles (just put in last month - old engine big end went). The turbo (TD04 I believe on these?) has done 150k. The fuel pump is uprated and brand new.
I'm going to get it remapped. I have no interest in extra power (but don't care if it comes safely) - I just want optimal fuelling and reliability.
The turbo currently seems fine and it's just as quick as it was when I got it in 2007, but the turbo has done 150k... My thoughts are circling around whether or not to get a new TD04 now (are these easy to get hold of?) or whether to map with current turbo and if it dies at a later date, will a replacement turbo be exactly the same and not need a further map? Hope that makes sense! Any advice much appreciated.

Remapping wont really get you much of what you want if thats the case, a little more power could help though, you can got for a decent rise in power without wringing every last bhp out of it. Like for likes should never need mapping changes.

From my limited knowledge of just havng one done the key thing is to make sure the engine is solid before it is tweaked. To that end when API did mine they did a leak down test and compression test which I believe gives a good indication of the health of the engine.
Above and beyond that I dunno but a turbo with 150K on the clock sounds a little sub optimal.
As a guide mine has just hit 70K and I was advised remapping on standard engine shouldn't really be done above 80K.
HTH.

Yeah, not for for fuel economy, but for keeping the engine alive this time around. Admittedly, 150k is a decent life. It's a wagon for throwing the mountain bike in the back I need it to survive!
And the other one is a WR Ltd Legacy (not a WR1). Very smooth twin scroll EJ20, and the McIntosh stealth hifi install. For motorway miles.
