RB5 gearbox rebuild or swap it
Evening all...
My RB5 has a rattle in 3rd gear and had it apart and Ive been told I either need to rebuild it or get a stronger one.. I've got 334bhp and 302lbt from the wrx sti engine that's in it. What do you recommend? I can't quite afford a 6speed box but I also know I'm not wanting to do a cheap repair as I'm planning to track it and I've also go 5 days at nurburgring in April so it's gunna get some hammer....
Hope you can help. Thankyou

The only way you are going to get reliability is to fit a 6 speed... That's the reality I'm afraid. I went through two 5 speeds before fitting a six speed. That was with 320 bhp.
People will say drive it sympathetically etc etc..and it will last... If you drive it on track it will break again. Be a shame to go all the way to the ring for it to break... and then all the agro getting it home.
Plus 6 speed ratios are manic fun with a good cruising top.
You can get away with a UK 6 speed bug sti propshaft. .gear linkage and 6 speed rubber box mount. Keep your rear diff flywheel clutch .starter etc.

Learnt the hard way... Rebuilt the box and went to Oulton park yesterday, 3rd gear decided it no longer wanted to be part of the car :-( can't risk it again. Message matty but had no reply, any ideas how to get intouch?

It'll be worth it, I need it to be strong enough for the track, I'd be lost without my rb5. Just found this link on another thread.... Have you heard of these before mate?http://www.gears.tv/products.html#
This could be an option do you think?

PPG or Albins 5 speed gear kit if you want to keep the original box. One of those kits is £3k plus fitting. Hence
6 speed starts looking good value.

Hahaha Yeh your not kidding... I was told my 3rd gear rebuild would stand the power no problem. So it's going back to them. Hopefully get a refund or settle the difference on a 6 speed box. Thanks again for helping me out mate.

Managed to get intouch with MB and ordered my 6speed box :-). I did speak to east subaru and they were very helpful but MB is only 2hr from me and was slightly cheaper. Pick it up on Monday so if anyone is interested a rebuilt 5 speed let me know.. It's a 752 box and I'll find the rest of the code on Monday... Thanks for everyone's help, since getting my rb5 and using this forum it's given me alot more confidence in doing the right repairs on my car. Cheers Ben

6 speed is a bit of a hefty outlay... but it's the best option in the long run..
Plus if you want more power it can take 400 bhp all day long..

The way I saw it was if I end up repairing my 5 speed box twice, also the chances of it going would be when I'm on track so that's 2 track days wasted and I'm going to nurburg in 5 weeks so I wasn't risking it going pop there... To top it off I've lost faith in the 5 speed so would of driven it like a granny. So 6 speed became the cheaper option :-) the things we do to enjoy driving haha.
