This is a very funny story. Android TV with Google Play, quite old. Kids downloaded an app to watch a movie, a few minutes in and this ransomware was staring at them. OK it's a TV, just hard reset it, that's a hidden feature that's not proving easy to get to.

Easily done TV or not, just install kodi, which is probably what was done, then anything can be side loaded.
That particular one doesn't mention what the idiot family member did, probably something similar to the above. We will never know.

One of his kids downloaded a dodgy app from the Play store to watch a movie. It's an LG running Google TV all official but not available any more.

I'm not sure why you're trying to swing this to Apple but to answer your question do a search, it was reported as an industry first everywhere, made the BBC news the day after I reported it.
