advice, which LapTop for Photo Editing?
go on, other than a Mac, what Laptop should I be looking at.
What is the spec that allows ease to photo edit large (RAW) files and I use LightRoom 6.
My Medion 17" laptop I hav enow already has a 8gb memory and looking round in PCworls/Currys/JohnLewis laptops seem to be still 8 gig.
I still would like a 17" screen as we have no where to put a large desktop set up. Plus I like to watch Tv and be on the net at the same time with the laptop on my knee lol
I'm wanting a better quality picture/screen aren't I?
more than 8 gig?
graffix card thats dedicated?
and what would SSD do for me?
about £700???? possible?
any help/links would be helpful
tnx

If you can, get into one of the stores and try some out, it's not all about specs it has to feel right too. You might struggle to get everything you want for £700 so look at crossing off one or two things that can be replaced later like SSD and Memory, a new laptop will be faster anyhow.

a glossy 1080 screen will give me best results on processing photos over my 1600x900 I have now won't it?

You'll need a high res screen that can be properly calibrated for accuarate colour.
Personally I'd go matte rather than glossy. And as big as you can go

Processor:
i5 (if you have a dedicated onboard graphics card which lightroom can utilise)
Otherwise
i7
Disk
SSD all the way - don't worry if only 256gb, you can plug in a USB external for storage, just keep your working files on the SSD and move out when done.
Screen
Horses for courses here. Ideally a high end IPS panel with 95%+ Adobe RGB - but that'll cost you. I quite like the dell true-life screens if budget is a bit tight.
RAM
16gb is the norm currently. 8 will probably do if you get an SSD, it's cheap enough to upgrade anyway.
30 second on ebay:

Bit above your budget though. . .

I like the £839 Dell, what company is that on ebay.. are they ok?
if you have a SSD, does that mean you don't have a HD as well?

I've not bought from them but I know the type.
They make a living buying cancelled orders and factory refurbs from dell. They come with a dell warranty.
SSD VS HDD is like night & day. I would never go back to a conventional disk for my OS / Apps. HDD's are fine for storage .

I can only assume so. I've bought 10+ laptops from these resellers (although not this particular one), apply the usual ebay safety checks if you are unsure.
Yes you contact dell.
While it is warranty I recommend investigating extension options.

I'm still looking, but as my wife has said, don't buy for the sake of it.. plus you've a tax bill to pay at the end of Jan.
She said wait till April then put it as a business expense for 2017/18
do I want to wait till then! lol

The original poster has said his budget is approx. £700
That rules out a mac that will be thousands of pounds
Salsaking - I'd avoid a glossy screen - it'll drive you mad with glare.
Have a look as the Asus range - I've had a few with 17" screens. Usually decent specs for the money, you could go for a totally custom built laptop

Salsa i use a 27inch retina MAC for mine, i do both Nikon Raw at 23 and 43meg files, and also Sony Raw at 43mg and 120mg.
The Macs xpensive but second to none is that retina screen for editing photos, massive real estate to tinker on..
But if i was within your budget id get a Core I5 from ChillBlast with at least 16 and pref 32gb ram.
Make sure you have an SSD drive as the boot drive, and get a Card reader fitted, Failing that the Sandisk USB 3 one is a good one.
Screen wise with a PC you can save up and get one of the nice DELL 27inchers that does 4k
But bare this in mind, i also have a 4k Laptop the Asus Zenbook pro 501 and the MAC still blows it away with colour rendition and ease of use for Lightroom, but if your not a MAC man where i wasn't, there a bast to learn and i still prefer windows LOL... they do do a smaller MAC retina 4k if you can stretch ...

a desk top is not an option, or a separate screen, I've no room for it. I neglected to design a study when we had the house re built.. but we can sit 8 in the dining room nicely lol
£700.. I can go a but more than that, but don't want to go stupid.
a card reader is handy
