Hi All.
I have a problem that it is often a bit hard to swiftly change down into 4th gear when driving my MY94 Impreza WRX.
It just doesn't slot in nicely, and might take two attempts to push it home. NOT a good thing when changing down to overtake!
There isn't any gear graunching noise.
Does this mean that the synchro is phut and will cost me a packet to get fixed?
(or does anyone know a cheap fix?)

Any ideas or help appreciated,
dave

I think it is slightly thinner when cold but it retains its viscosity when it gets hot where a mineral oil might get too thin and start to break down . My box probably needs a overhaul anyway after 120k but I'm trying to put it off as this was the only problem I've had with it and it seems to be cured .

Try changing to mobil 1 synthetic gear oil . I had the same problem in my '91 legacy and this sorted it . Very scary innit , coming into a fast 4th gear corner and finding a box of neutrals !

Thanks for the idea. Do you have any idea why changing oils would affect the synchro? Is that oil more/less viscous?
