View Full Version : Insured on a P1 at 21!?!
P1Fanatic 04 February 2002, 14:46 Only a V reg low mileage Nissan Primera which makes Scooby depriciation seem amazing. £13k paid 3 years ago and have been offered 5k p/ex by Audi so expect the same from Subaru. Will be getting the rest on a loan as I am ****e at saving - once Im paying x amount per month off a loan im fine. So will be looking for an £18k loan over 4 years.
The annoying thing is I should really wait a couple more months to clear some other debts but my mate P1Enthusiast keeps bringing his around and taking me out for a spin and it kills me as I so want one. Was really funny yesterday, 5 of us in the car (lots of room in back it must be said) and we had a fiesta trying to keep up coming out of the karting centres car park - poor dude nearly lost it :)

JayCole 26 March 2002, 09:52 Guy's,
Not a scoob owner yet but will be in about a year - yer I know it's a while away but -
I want to get a P1. Will be able to afford it when i'm 21 but the insurance is the problem.
I did a quote with Bell-Direct with my girlfriend as the main driver - she'll be 22 at the time with about 3/4 years NCB and I put myself as a named drive it came to £2000.
Is that good? I'm paying just under 2 grand now on a 106 GTI.
STi wanna Subaru 26 March 2002, 10:02 (sorry to be negative) What happens if you and your girlfriend split up? you're best getting the policy in your name and building up your no claims.
POC on this board has a '95 WRX. He's 22 and is paying £2K+ but his car is an import and modified.
JayCole 26 March 2002, 10:21 Yer thats a good point but evan if the car was in my bro-in-laws name it'd still be that price. Thats just an expample. I'd still have a car insured in my name cos thats what i'd use everyday to get to work - but something cheap to run. By the time i'm 21 i'll have 3 years NCB as long as I have no crashes! but in my name it'd be about 4k!
It's just an idea - I love the P1's and badly want one!
Dan B 26 March 2002, 16:50 I love P1's and badly want one, but at the mo just not possible. I pay over the odds for insurance on a 93WRX, and am 23. I'm waiting on the 25year mark before even treading the path.
Just think how more statisfying it will be if you have to wait.
I'm also hoping that in 2 years time I can pick up an unmodded P1 for less than 20k....?
JayCole 26 March 2002, 17:04 Thats what I was thinking - Being able to pick 1 up for 20k would be a right result - I could wait but I'm not that kind of person - once I realise I can afford something and get the idea in my head I can't back out.
Like I said i'm already paying about 2k on a 106 GTi so sod it. Being insured on an M3 Evo doesn't help either the power is quality
P1Fanatic 28 March 2002, 19:25 Best Ive found is around £1,200 with Privilege. Me 25, 5years PNCB, no points, garaged, trackstar'd etc.
MARK MORRIS 28 March 2002, 19:49 im paying £1676 , im 31, 7 years ncb, 6 points and a claim last year, that includes mods to brakes , 18's and a ss exhaust

TonyBurns 29 March 2002, 14:04 Insurance isnt always the problem on cars like these, the 2 services a year, the much higher running costs of a P1 compared to a 106 gti, the fact that the car is a theif magnet and also being a named driver will get you into more trouble than its worth as if you have an accident and found to be the person who does the most miles in the car you will forfit your insurance and be left with a rather hefty bill to pay!
Insurance is a mine field, one wrong step and your history :(
you may be better buying an STI5 type R (grey import) and have some more money left in your pocket as this car is what the P1 is based on.
IMHO i dont think that you will be able to find many P1's under 20k in a years time as most still go for 27-25k and the cheapest one ive seen is for around 23k....
Tyres will cost over 100 quid each, you will have to buy in pairs, sometimes all 4 at once, services can cost up to 500 quid and there are 2 a year!
With the slow increase of fuel (optimax is now at around 75-76pp ltr) and these cars aint reknown for fuel economy, you may be best waiting for a bit longer, maybe 2-3 years and build up your no claims bonus first before you take the step into subaru ownership (or buy a turbo ;) but the costs are going to be just as much for services and tyres etc).

P1Fanatic 30 March 2002, 02:07 Well my logic is that the P1 comes with all the goodies I would want to add to a MY02 WRX but at only £1,200 for insurance. A stock WRX would cost me £900 then add onto that mods like decent 17's, rear spoiler, suspension, exhaust, colourcoding, sports grilles, strut brace, front lip spoiler etc then it will be a lot more than £1,200 and still IMHO wont look as good and will definetely not perform as well. Add to the equation that its my dream car and my mind is set. Im biding my time as I have £18k to spend plus my current car which Audi offered me £5k p/ex for so Im looking to spend £23k or hopefully bid for a £24k P1 and haggle them down. Plenty good spec P1's going for that sort of money. Only thing Id make sure it had were the alcon brake upgrade or similar.
JayCole 02 April 2002, 09:14 Tony,
Thanks for your thoughts. It's still a fair way away so things may all change. The chances are that if it was in my girls name she would have it for going to work and back and I'd have it at the weekends and evenings.
I know what your saying about the services etc but think i'd be able to cope with that.
Petrol would be paid for by work too. It all depends if I could find a real nice one for about 23 /24k next november. I should hopefully be able to.
I'm insured on my bro in laws M3 Evo and I would get one of those as you can pick them up for a lot less but the looks of the P1 arwhat I really want.
P1Fanatic 02 April 2002, 11:25 Jaycole, I was put off by the P1 purely on insurance and Im 25. But then I looked into buying a UK WRX and when adding all the upgrades to it my insurance would be up there with the P1. Plus when you come to sell, all the goodies you bought with your hard earned cash will be worth next to nothing whereas with the P1 its all standard.
Ive been looking for a while and the P1 prices have stabilised- most are between £23-£27k with a few priced so high they will never sell. The only thing to look for is a brake upgrade as the standard brakes are pants. Hopefully I can haggle £1k of the advertised price (see my thread on this in general) but I'll let you know how I get on as Im planning to buy end of May if I can find the right car.
JayCole 02 April 2002, 13:08 What car you selling? Or are you getting a loan for most of it.
I should have 6-8k is cash when the time comes to get one and plus I'd sell my 106 GTi for around 5k SO i'd need say a 10k loan which is what I have now anyway?
Keep me posted mate.
LEE P 05 April 2002, 02:59 Tyres over a 100 quid?? why?
215/40/17 goodyear F1's on O.Z racing, 78 quid fitted inc vat!
and there not that much worse on fuel when driven sensibly.
is the servicing much more than a standard scoob?
Lee
MARK MORRIS 05 April 2002, 10:02 around town my p1 does 1 mpg more than my wifes 1.6 escort, but on a run her car does about 8 mpg more than the scoob

Dont forget that you should have a tracker (more monthly bills and 600 quid at the start) plus an anti-hijack alarn is a must have (Clifford BlackJack or similar). Not being paranoid about security, but i would not want some scrote nicking my P1 just after i had bought it and getting away with it !!
Dave
JayCole 05 April 2002, 11:01 Yep thought of that one mate a tracker would be a must. It'd be garaged and have a rotwieller to guard it at night ;-) . My work car park has its own security team so all I gotta watch is that I dont get jumped at the lights etc.
By the way whats the MPG on a P1?
LeonWells 05 April 2002, 11:18 Hi, have you tried Tesco Insurance! id never of gone to them but im 23 and its costing me £850 fully comp, ive got 4 years NCB, 3 points. The only thing I had to do was fit a tracker, cost me £269 to fit + £99 per year. Car is a 99T UK Turbo.
Id defo recommend an Impreza Turbo and the P1 is awsome, I dont think servicing is that bad, yeah I just had the cam belt service and it was £398! but normal services are about £150. Car would be under warranty as well and subaru warranty is good, I got a nice new set of brake discs free :)
anyway id best get back to work! just thought id throw in my thoughts :) ... your only young once so go for it!! (thats what I did 2 years ago!)
Leon
JayCole 05 April 2002, 12:58 Thats my thoughs exactly! You only live once
TonyBurns 05 April 2002, 13:19 P1's come with trackstar std ;) plus the cat1 alarm.
Mpg will be roughly the same as an STI, different gearing probably helps it a little thou ;)
Insurance is mainly dependant on where you live (post code wise) where the car is kept (ie in the garage) and age (plus convictions etc) so living in a low risk area will keep your insurance down.
