Thumbs up

Hello folks,
As a lot of us know, last year there was a drive on here to install the United Devices Anti-Cancer program on many of our PC's

An online team was also started by Steve Breen, called the 'Impreza WWW Owners Club'. We have 305 active members out of 316 currently all merrily crunching data away in the hope of seriously aiding research into Cancer. Out of 24,253 teams, we are within the top 50 for cpu time used, results returned and points generated. That is pretty impressive!
What this software basically does is create a giant supercomputer, where millions of small packets of data are sent out to client machines, processed and then returned via the web.
The client software maxs' out your CPU calculating the data, but only when your machine is not particularly active, therefore there is not much of a performance hit at all. When doing intensive stuff such as games, it goes into idle automatically.
This really is a good thing to be doing and it is for an excellent reason, The potential cure of Cancer.

If you want more info on what this all is, then go to www.ud.com and have a look around.

The actual program to download for PC is at the following:
http://download.ud.com/gold/win32/ud_agent_setup.exe
If memory serves, it is only slightly over 2mb in size.
That's about it! Oh, you will of course be wanting to join the Scooby team, won't you!!!!
Once fully installed, simply goto the following:

http://members.ud.com/services/teams...F-F7E54398A3C2
Press the right buttons and that's it, you are now part of the team!

Sorry for the novel, but there you go

Come on, it's so easy to help, you'd be silly not to!

Cheers,

Nick

Well said - I've seen a lot of new names on Scoobynet since this project was last publicised.

It's worth mentioning that the cancer research software is easy to install, and entirely unobtrusive. You really can just install it once and forget it's there. It will just happily chug away in the background, and talk to the server when it needs to and when you have an internet connection available. You don't have to worry about making extra internet calls, or saving its work before you switch off. It even knows not to drain your laptop battery.

I'm proud to be a part of the team - Scoobynet (and other Impreza owners' groups) have contributed a whopping 127 years of CPU time to this project. We have over 300 members, and in terms of useful computation done we're ahead of teams like 'France', 'IBM', 'Compaq', 'University of Oxford', 'Cisco Employees' and so on. We've made a difference.

Please, get involved. It's worthwhile, and it's free.

Andy.

Agreed - we've had just three signups in the last week. Kudos to those three, I see your PCs have been busy, but where's everybody else? (The most recently joined members are listed here).

The Impreza WWW Owners team now has 308 members, which is brilliant - but still pretty poor compared to the 11000 registered ScoobyNet members. Get involved, people!

Welcome aboard to our new members, thanks for sparing a few minutes

I started this last year, but the PC just wasn't upto it. Now that you have reminded me, I have resigned up and can hopefully contribute something... (even if it still only a bit!)

I have two machines working on this. My main home PC only works evenings and weekends, but is relatively fast and has produced good results.

The other one is my ADSL server. It runs constantly but slowly. It's a PII 350 with plenty of memory. Now, if someone could donate a decent PIII processor I could get some decent scores!

Does it give any other clues as to what the problem might be?

If you're running on Windows 2000/NT/XP? you need to be logged in as an administrator, could that be it?

I remember seeing this on the TV and never heard anything else about it. Just signed up (as S Crosby)and joined the team. Definitely a worthwhile cause. Come on everyone sign up!

I'm running this, but am in another team. Perhaps I should switch teams, then I can claim the number one slot

I've got over 10 yrs CPU time and over 1 million points

Pity you can't switch teams and take the points with you though

Not sure I quite understand the problem

When you double-click the UD agent icon, you get a window showing various pieces of info about your score, what the agent is working on and so on.

If you click the leftmost button, you get a window which shows your member info and device statistics. Presumably this is working?

Now pick 'view your scores and rewards', and log into the UD members' site. Does this work? At which point exactly does it go wrong?

If I have a criticism of the UD programme (note, 'programme' as in the whole scheme, as opposed to 'program' meaning just the software), it's that the site isn't particularly clear or well laid-out, and I had some problems getting started too. Once you're all set up, it does work well.

Unhappy

Can't help there - sorry

Is there not an obvious link on the UD site to register? Maybe you need to wait a day or two for your details to propagate through their system?

I've got 2 years and a 199 days of CPU time with 177,498 points. Andy, I notice you're slipping behind a little in the 11th April 2001 joiners club (natural competion afterall )

I'm still just behind Tuckshop but I'll catch him yet

Ian, damn you, I just can't seem to catch you up

Need more CPU power!!!!

Matt

P.S. Come on guys, join up and help the cause.......
