Maffa,

Which DVD player do you have ?

Are you sure that it definitely does not convert signals to PAL60 ? Most do....

If your DVD player can output RGB through a SCART, you could also try that as this is not affected by PAL/NTSC conversion...

Thanks

Gavin

Gents,
GavinP is right about using a scart connector. If your television is reasonably new, last 10 yrs or so, then it should happily display the picture in colour through the scart - you shouldnt need a converter. I dont think S-Video will do colour and the normal RF-in defitnately wont.

A good NTSC<>PAL converter is going to set you back a lot more than the prices quoted here!

You could try asking the question on http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/ as there will be knowledge of both your DVD player and converters.

Maffa,

I am not familiar with your player but you want to check the instructions and setup menu for it to ensure that RGB signals are sent via the SCART cable to your TV. This setting is normally close to where you specify that you have a normal or widescreen TV.

Once you have setup your DVD player to use RGB, try plugging the DVD Scart into both sockets (if there is more than one) on your TV. Normally AV1 is RGB.

See post by mgarner:

Which TV do you have ?

Thanks

Gavin

I've got a Philips DVD Player (762 I think) and our JVC TV (5 years old at most) wont play the NTSC DVDs - every other TV in the house will though!
It is connected via scart too, I think it is just a 100% PAL TV.
UK region DVDs work fine but region 1 DVDs e.g. Lord of The Rings (surely not!) wont work.
Strange eh?

MAFFA

from my experience, scart usually does the trick... all the clever stuff goes on in the background, but you'll possibly need to check how the output from your dvd can be set up.... should work..

there'll be a lionk to forums or technical bits somewhere on the front page, have a look through there to see what other people have done to cure this sort of problem.

good luck

Right now i've had a look at both the TV (Mitsubishi CT-21A2STX)& the DVD instructions & according to those it should work!!!!

TV - "There is a choice of auto colour PAL or 60PAL. In most cases you can use auto. Sometimes, however, it will be necessary to pre-set the system manually, for examplein the case of a weak broadcast. All broadcasts in the UK are in system PAL. Note that 60PAL is only used for playing back NTSC video tape through the aerial input"

DVD - Output CVBS,(PAL/NTSC),RGB

Now in the back of the DVD manual it says that if the picture is in black & white then the disc format is not according to the TV-set used (PAL/NTSC).

The one thing that got me was the "...through the aerial input." It also says "NOTE: colour adjustment is not possible in TELETEXT mode or when using the RGB input of the AV1 connector."

Now am I right in assuming that the only way i'm going to get colour is through the aerial & not the SCART????

Heeeeelp!!!!!

Maffa,

Have you tried setting the DVD player to RGB output and plugging it in to the back of the TV in AV1 ?

This should work fine now you have confirmed both the DVD player and TV can take a RGB signal - the only possible problem may be that the SCART cable you are using is not wired up for RGB. Worth trying a different one if that is the case.

The bit about "NOTE: colour adjustment is not possible in TELETEXT mode or when using the RGB input of the AV1 connector." means you can't adjust colour, brightness and sharpness like a normal TV picture. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks

Gavin

Thanks

Right now i've sorted it Every time I want to watch a region 1 DVD I have to set the DVD player to the right RGB setting (there's about 4) & then I have to set the TV to PAL because for some reason it doesn't stay on it when the DVD starts to play. And then Hey Presto "Colour" It doesn't matter if I use the SCART 1 or 2 socket in the back of the TV either.

Oh well I just had to watch the Fast & the Furious again last night. That's three times in three days

Glad to hear you've got it working - it still sounds a bit complicated though !

It is unlikely that both scart sockets are RGB on your TV (would be VERY unusual) so I would keep it plugged into AV1.

At this stage, I would recommend you try/buy a new scart cable (which is marked as RGB/"fully wired").

You should be able to see an improvement in picture quality when RGB is selected.

Thanks

m8 the picture quality is astounding. I've never had a DVD player before & it's just an incredible difference

It is definately plugged into AV2 as my digibox is in AV1 but I think you can adjust the PAL on the TV for either AV's.

Thanks for your help guys
