I remember reading a while back about someone purchasing a mongoose down pipe for the subaru and it gave yellow(?) flames out of the exhaust when changing gear, was this correct? As I am in the stage of doing some modifications to my subaru impreza wrx sti version IV type-R coupe, and I would like this. Also what is the best induction kit for bhp? Blitz or?

Yes I can see that, however, not one of them mention using the mongoose downpipe, hence why I am asking...

 

Best thing to do is to run a cheap lighter (one of those at 5 for a quid type) from your throttle, put it on high flame and there we are - fire!!

The Magnex 6 x 4 seemz 2 do the job, providing u`ve decatted, The Apex 4" doesn`t On the induction side the HKS job works 4 me.

I think flames depend not only on the downpipe but also how rich the car runs on overrun.

I've just had a full Scoobymania exhaust fitted with Uni-Filter panel filter and don't get any flames or pops (as far as I can tell).

I *think* I got a couple of pathetic pops the other day

From what I can gather, and please correct me if I am wrong guys, flames depend on:

1. Downpipe and what it's made of, i.e. some get hotter than others etc.
2. How the car runs, I think that induction kits/air filters generally lean-out the mixture as they allow more air in (right?) and dump-valves can rich-up the mixture as they can fool the ecu, which will subsequently let more fuel in!
3. How you drive!

You could always come up with an afterburner system like fighter jets etc, just inject fuel directly into the exhaust and away you go

Induction kits etc do allow more air into the engine but the ecu measures with the airflow meter and fuels to suite, you will not get a lean mixture so they are totally safe.

Dumpvalves that dump to atmosphere do confuse the ecu as air that passes the AFM will be dumped but the ecu still fuels for the amount of air passed. This is not all good news, the fuel could ignite in the turbo causing massive strain. The lambda sensor could detect an over rich mixture and lean off the fuel, not good when you come back on power. Most scoobs over fuel to a certain degree so you may get flame/you may not.

I think the model of Impreza has a bearing on it too.

I have a MY96 large turbo model with only a Magnex back box, this pops and sometimes bangs on the overrun after a hardish drive.
salsa-king has a MY97 small turbo model with a Magnex back box and has recently fitted a centre section and it still doesn't pop and bang like mine.

Looks like a lot of seperate things play a part.

I have a lovely picture taken from the car behind, of a backfire and big flame on the overrun. Trying to find a setting on the ECU software to cut off the fuel.

I think the answer is...... maybe.

You are getting loud bangs now which suggests unburnt fuel is being ignited, by fitting the downpipe you have a straight through path for the flame to exit. If the rest of the exhaust is too cool the flame will be extinguished so you will have to be on a mission.

If you are after big flameouts you are going to be have to go down the dumpvalve or ecu route and stand the risk associated with doing it.

Shouldn't be any risk just fitting the downpipe, it's just if you start to fool the engine into overfueling that things start to get unpredictable.

I've got a full Mongoose system (incl. DP) with a PiperX filter and APEXI BoV. It pops and bangs like a mad thing on the over-run. I've been told that it puts a nice bit of flame out of the back ~ obviously I haven't seen them though

I don't have any Scoob/Flame pictures although I have seen them do it. Mike's Cosworth is in a different class power wise, it runs 500bhp+ which uses lots of fuel and generates lots of heat. A Scoob engine would have melted long before this sort of power was reached.

It was flaming out from lifting off down Donnington's pit straight all the way until power was re-applied. Don't think damaged paint work, think melted bumper.

It flamed out as he was pulling ito the pits around 3 metres from where I was standing and I could feel the heat as he came past.

Scoobs tend to have the odd second or two flame flash with a very small yellow flame and even this is very rare. Come along to a track day and have a look for yourself.
