My sis in law is picking up one of these at the weekend - july 2000 car and not the F2 model.

Anyone driven one? what are they like?

 

Not driven one, but been a passenger in one a few times - my dad had a standard 2-litre one, then traded it in for an F2 Evo.

Goes ok, but the engine sounds very coarse.
Never been in such a cramped, claustophobic thing in my life though.

 

good for what it is.

Definately a raucous engine, but goes well. Bit cheap and cheerful inside, but a good level of equipment.


If you're over 6 foot forget it!

 

Definitely agree with the coarse engine comments - the neighbour's got one and it sounds like a bag of spanners. Maybe it is?

 

I took a test drive in the original Lux model a few years ago (leather and AC). It looked nice from the outside (red) and wasn't to bad to drive. Seemed quite sharp steering/suspension setup, engine was a little gutless. (they have since increased the BHP with the F2 model).

 

Driven both the standard 2.0SE and the F2 Evolution.

The std one is gutless and very coarse. You have to ring the engine dry to get any performance out of the thing. Mind you it is ok equipment wise, but won't wear well.

The Evolution model is better handling, but that's it. It has a Magnex back box and still sounds crap.

Anyway it still looks good!!Enjoy

its ok as long as you are a chinese with a folding back - I am not tall but my head had to be bent to sit in it - TERRIBLE!! look nice though!

cheers for the comments. Not my cup of tea, but she was restricted coz she's 22 and only had 9K to spend.

I'm 6'5" and I fitted in an F2 no problem, but all the black leather and plastic did make it seem gloomy!

 

Ohh i wouldn't have got one of those!!

Should have bought a 1.7 Puma or a s/hand Scooby.

Both much more fun to drive, the Puma will literally run rings around a Hyuindai Coupe.

My Better (as she calls herself!) half tried The Hyundai coupe, Calibre, Honda Prelude and Civic VTI, etc and finally the Puma 1.7 - game over she had the Puma.

Oh and finally - the Coupe f1 or F2 are living proof that you cannot polish a turd!

Yeah, I guess the Puma is a good girls car , definitely rate it higher than a Hyundai.
Maybe tell your friend not to go for the Hyundai if she can still back out, Ford's resale value's are amazingly low, so she could get a 2nd hand Puma for about the same price, probably a little more ilage though.
As far as performance though, I dont know about a Puma running rings around the Hyundai, even the Racing Puma is pretty slow, so the standard one cant be quicker than the 2.0 Hyundai Coupe' can it?

Puma 1.7 - BHP 125 (120bhp per tonne) - 0-60 8.2 secs top speed 125mph average MPG 40 hehe!

Hyundai Coupe 2.0SE 137BHP (118bhp per tonne)
0-60 8.6 top speed 124mph 31.7 ave. mpg

Not alot in it on paper. The Puma is one of the best handling FWD drive cars I have ever driven and it has great brakes as well! point to point the Puma is much quicker and a much better drive than the Hyundai.

The Puma's Engine was designed by Yamaha for Ford and has variable valve timing of a sort it has a broad power band from a little as 2.5K revs up to 7.5k revs and is a smooth torquy motor. Unlike the Honda VTI engine. I had a Civic 1.6 VTI for about a year - great car.

Really the Puma has the Hyundai beat hands down - oh and that includes in the 'looks' department.

I know the Puma isnt a bad car, and those figures are really quite good, I am just one of the old school Ford dissers (they always break down, they retail for penny's, Fixed Or Repaired Daily etc etc), though that side of me is slowly starting to thaw with the therapy.
To Fosters: One thing I will say though, is that, surprisingly for a manufacturer specialising in cheaper cars, Hyundai's reliability record doesnt appear to be too bad, so if your friend gets the Hyundai, she may have a reliable car that doesnt look too bad, and can compete with the majority of cars on the road for a lot less money, which I suppose isnt the worst possible scenario in the world of car buying.
I hope she made the dealer throw in just about every extra they have, the market is tough now, and Hyundai's arent the most sought after cars, so the ***** in her court.
Edited to include the information that Jennifer Lopez has left Puff Daddy, WOOOHOOO!!, apparently the thought of what Puff will be getting up to in jail did not amuse.

I think you will find that Jennifer Lopez has left Puff Daddy (I say left but this is all just spin from her record company) is because her new album comes out next week and she doesn't want to be associated with him and the bad press that goes with him because of his trial!

Anyway back to the Hyundai, For badge appeal alone I think it ranks alongside Proton and Daewoo. I think the Hyundai Coupe was reasonably fashionable for a while but now has all the appeal of a pair of Asda Trainers. In my eyes it isn't much better than a Vauxhall Tigra. In a few years these things are going to be worth about the same as the old Hyundai Scoupe!!

For 9 grand get something else, If it was my money I would go for the Puma (1.7 NOT 1.4)or a decent Fiat Coupe 20 Valve Turbo.

You can get brand new Ford Pumas for £12,995 now so why not get one on a PCP or something??

 

Bizarrely the 1.6 Hyundai Coupe is a much sweeter engine. I agree the 2 litre is as coarse as Roy'Chubby'Brown on a Saturday night!!! (and that's pretty damn coarse!)

I would go for the 1.6 poverty model, it drives so much better.

Mind you I have to say the Puma is a fantastic drivers car and I don't even like Fords. It looks the Biz (esp if S McQueen Driving!) and its suspension and NVH is incredible. Much better than the Hyundai.

Horses for courses, the Puma's quite a bit smaller physically than the Hyundai, but the hyundai's like sitting in a cave its so damn black inside!!

Puma alloy gearknob is so F@*king cold this time of year you have to wear gloves!!

Interesting plight....The original Hyundai Coupe, when it came out was Stop the Traffic gorgeous looks wise, but the Puma's no minger either. The new Hyundai is spoilt in my opinion from the old one.
