Just a quick question please - im doing my kitchen up at mo-and in one corner is a vent that just vents to originally outside but now just leads into the room at back of garage- its just a straight thro vent no motor etc in there so question is do i need to keep this vent or can it be blocked off? is there something in a building regulation that says you must have a vent somewhere in your house?

Any help please

Almost certian the only vents ive put in new kitchens are from the cooker hood extractor and tumble driers

what about a boiler? if you have an open flue boiler it will need a vent to supply combustion air, or if it is an open plan lay out and you have a gas fire it may be required for that.

On the other hand if your boiler is room sealed, and you dont have a gas fire, or you have a fire and it does not require a air vent, then you should be ok to seal it up, hope this makes sense!

my boiler is in the room at back of garage and which has its own vent at back of it to outside, i have a gas fire but that is in living room and my house isnt open plan..... so was this vent originally put there for a reason or not as if i dont need it i'd rather blank it off.

If youve got a gas fire in the living room then there should be a vent in the living room somewhere, in the skirting or the floor or through the wall. Your vent in the kitchen would be no use for venting a gas fire in the other room.

never noticed a vent in living room in all years i have lived here-only one outside wall to my living room and nought inside on that wall-there is however an air brick on outside of that wall but nought on inside :wonder:

only needed if the fire is over 7kw/25,000btu's or its a decorative fire, in which case a certain sized vent is required.

That vent will probably let air under floor and will find its way past the carpet into the room. Usually we fit them in the floor next to the fire or in the skirting if its a old house with big skirtings

You might have answered your own question bud, if you had a room built on behind the kitchen thens it most probablt that it was ok to do so...

You've a lecky cooker = no vent required

Room sealed boiler = no vent required (takes air from outside for combustion and spits it back out through the flue, the POC that is (products of combustion)

Gas Fire = depends on what output it is, its more than likely if it needed a vent, it would have one, behind a rad maybe if you have one that sits under a window??? Its the duty of the person installing a fire to put a vent in.

I reckon your ok to go for it :thumb:

mate, did you read my reply or others?

A gas fire only needs a vent if it has an output over 7kw, if its over, it should have a vent....

What happened with the bird behind the fire? Did you get it removed? If not, it might have blocked the flue/chimmey for the fire...I hope you arn't gonna use it or you could all end up with co poisoning...:norty:

Btw, a fire sends its POC or products of combustion up the chimmney, a vent is there for extra ventilation if needed :thumb:
