Looking for some quick drying Eggshell paint to paint a kitchen/kitchen diner, so decided to go to the local dulux centre, then saw that a 5L tin costs a wacking £53.

Across the road is a leyland/Johnsons paint shop which had the paint for £32.

Is the dulux paint that much better, than other brands?

Dulux QD eggshell is good but is it really that expensive, I`m going to paint my bath/shower room ceiling in white with it, but I`m getting enough from site on Monday, on the job i`m on now we`ve used over 100x5 litres of the stuff painting blockwork walls. It has good coverage so will cover identical colours with one coat so if you are doing a colour change use a cheaper brand matt for the 1st and 2nd coat then use the Dulux QD Eggshell for the final coat. Oh and usually white and magnolia are cheaper than any colours.

its good stuff, it'll be the Diamond 'tuff' water base eggshell :)

don't forget Eggshell is self undercoating, so two coats of the same.

All Torque,
why have they used eggshell on block work when soft sheen or vinyl silk would have been cheaper and easier to apply?

Its a new athletic stadium so it will have a load af abuse with sweaty bodies brushing against it I supose, anyways they specified the stuff so they are paying for it.

It's the Diamond tuff one, have used this before on a kitchen and bathroom celings has never let me down.

Doing this for my parents house, so it will take a pounding with all the grand children round making a mess.

Does anyone have any opinion on the other brands?

you could try CROWN it's owned by the same company who owns ICI (dulux).

anything else just isn't in the same league.

Saying that, also look at GLIDDENS, its another ICI product, not bad stuff if you don't want to pay dulux price.

I used some good stuff for my kitchen, its from Dulux Real Life Family Rooms range - main advantage is you can wash it down, which with a dog is a good bonus.

You can wash down emulsion, but it often ends up leaving lighter coloured patches.

I've found generally cheaper paint is often a false economy as it takes more coats, and doesnt give such a good finish as some of the better brands.

Saying that, Leyland paint is very good - the reason its cheaper is that its sold as a trade paint, but a lot of professional decorators use it.

that'll be a retail paint. the trade version will be Diamond Matt which is. Flat Matt you can wipe too.

Crown do a version called Clean Extreme which is scrubbable.

I use Johnstones/Leyland for all the interior stuff; Can't fault it.

Outside I use International...which happens to be under the same ownership as Sikkens and Dulux (all owned by Akzo Nobel - who also own ICI).
