OK, dumb question time:

I'm about to repaint the bedroom, where we have a deep pile carpet that I want to keep. Any suggestions about the best way to protect the carpet while I paint the skirting board?

We got some long thin wide plastic things from a DIY shop several years ago for exactly that. You push them down between the carpet & skirting then pull back to expose the skirting & they protect the carpet.

They were a bit of a pain to use though - I think if I was doing it again, I'd just roll back the carpet, then get a carpet fitter in to re-fit it again afterwards

Thought about wide masking tape and a bit of polythene?

Masking tape works well but dont take it up untill the gloss is dry

Pull the sides of the carpet up about a foot all around the room and put something heavy to stop it filpping back. It's easy enough to get it back down and looks as good as before. I have done this with no problems I took all the gripper up and sanded all the skiting boards as the people who owned the house before had painted them and then stuck carpet to them.

Masking tape works perfectly well.

Get the wide stuff and carefully place it so that it just overlaps onto the board, then using a 3” wide scraper push it down between the board and carpet whilst gently pulling the carpet away from the edge.

A bit of practice with the placement of the tape and you will end up with the edge of the carpet completely protected, and flattened away from the wall, exposing all of the board. Paint and allow to dry, remove tape.
