Default Retaining No Claims question

I recently sold my Scoobs and had 5 years protected no claims and am currently getting by without a car and will probably not get one for a few months. My insurance finished in May shortly after I sold the car. Question is how long do the No Claims last now I'm not currently insured ie if I were to buy a car 6 months down the line will I still be able to declare the no claims? I think I heard you could keep them for 12 months if not insured.

Cheers peeps
