Currently have a non IS 70-300 zoom lens but want to upgrade.

Should I get a IS lens, or one of the "white ones" :lol1:

CANON EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM LENS 70-300 mmhttp://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/uk/s.gif</IMG>

CANON 70-200MM F/4.0L USM LENS

Similar costs, but which one would produce better shots? Is IS a bit of a fad?

Lens will be used for motorsport/motocross, and I guess I only need a 200mm one.

It will be mounted on a 300d, but I plan to upgrade this soon too.

If you can manage without the 200-300 bit the 70-200 F4 L will be a major upgrade.

Alternative to consider - Sigma 100-300 f4 EX

Having had the predecessor to the 70-300 IS (the 75-300 IS) I'd definitely go for the L glass:thumb:

There is always the 70-200 f4.0 IS L ;)

So L lens look favorite.

I'll have to take a look at my pics and see what mm they were taken at.

I assume my old 70-300 USM would have some value?

Some value yes.

You may want to keep it for the time when you want 300mm and 200mm just won't do?

Or get a 1.4TC :D

Is a TC a convertor? That was going to be my next question.

Looks like I can get a 70-200 off ebay for about £350 delivered.

Yes Dave, TC is a convertor, dont bother with a 2x TC just get a 1.4x and see how you get on, it will drop the F on the lens from F4 (if you get the 70-200 F4) to F5.6 and the quality will drop a very very small amount, with the 2x it drops off a bit more quality wise and would drop it to F8 pretty much meaning you would lose AF unless you taped the pins.

To be fair, the newer version is a much better lens than the original. I have a 75-300 IS and it isn't great!

Having had the 70-300 IS for a little time and really liked it the only critiscism I have is that it could do with more range. Not keen on teleconverters as most wildlife occurrences appear to be in low light conditions so am seriously contemplating the 100-400L IS.
Depends what you are using it for but but 200mm might not be enough!

70-200 on a 1.6 crop factor camera is ideal for most motorsport, apart from Silverstone when you may as well leave it at home ;)

200 isn't enough at a lot of circuits. I've been using 300 as a minimum often with TC with my travels around the country this year.

I was thinkin more of rallying really :o. I must really try and do some circuit racing with the 100-400 IS then, when I get one of those Round Tuit thingies ;)

I did 2 days at Rockingham with a 100-400 and then a sprint at Teesside. A good lens until the light levels drop off, then I reverted to my Sigma 100-300 f4.

I hired it from Lenses For Hire Ltd. (http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk) (shameless plug for good service)

I've had some great results in various shoots using the 70-300 IS lens. It's a top lens with the right body so try it before you buy it. I couldnt see much difference from the 70-200 non IS model and with the extra length it's handy for motorsport shoots.

Having done silverstone yesterday Id say 70-200 F4 L I used was bare minimum at the 200mm end so youd need the 1.4TC on top to get that extra reach.

I dont have the funds yet but for next year plan on getting either the 300 L Prime + TC or the 100-400 L. Im not gonna read up on them yet as wallet already took a bashing today with a new tv :)
