Going to turf my back garden, did have a few tonne of gold stone down but we are changing that for turf.
I have moved all the stone, got to the soild and given it a good turning over and prepped it ready for turf.
My question is, the land drains which are at the bottom of the garden, there is like a border of stone.
My question is, if I put soil and turf on top of this will it still drain as it should?
cheers

you have a trench filled with stone? that;s a french drain. if you go over it with soil you may clog it up but it should still work. another option would be to put weed matting over the top of the stone and to put the soil on top of that. it should then work in the same way as a collander

cheers richardg thats exactly what it looks like.
When you say weed matting, I assume you mean the membrane stuff that stops weeds growing up under stone for instance? soil - membrane - stone

As long as you have a good covering of top soil over the drain then it will be fine, one thing for sure is that you wont end up the a boggy lawn which is a good thing. A membrane over the stone is a good idea, as said it will stop the drain from clogging up and your less likely to suffer the dreaded moss.
Nice to see someone putting some turf down,a bit of green in the garden makes all the difference, these days lots are ripping it up:nono:

yes that's the stuff. i said weed matting rather than membrane as to many people "membrane" can mean dpm type membrane which is impermeable. obviously you need to retain permeability, so weed matting (which probably is the stuff you will have put under your stones originally) should do the job.
i used it all round the borders of my garden when to took up all the stone. the then laid a brick line around the edge of the grass and added 2.5t of top soil to bring it level with the top of the bricks before reseeding the lawn. i now have bark chippings over the matting (which is also useful for hiding the watering system).

Im not going to turf over the land drain bit now, mrs had a cracking idea last night. Her idea was to just leav it as a border but put some of the gold stone on top :D
Heres me racking my brains on how to do it (would have meant increasing the level of the garden to compensate for the soil on top of the french drains) and she just pops up with that. :lol1:
So thats the plan now, instead of doing a little log type fence down either side, I am now going to do similar along the drain just to keep the grass seperate from the stones.

thats' what we used to have, but the stones found their way into the lawn and the cuttings found their way into the stones, hence why i went with the single course of upside down (ie frog down) bricks round the lawn and weed matting/bark chippings - cuttings will dry and blend with the chippings and the chippings can be raked off the lawn
