View Full Version : probs with launchs
scoobyluke23 08 June 2008, 11:11 i have a 05 plate hawkeye running around 350bhp, when i try launching off the lights i get a smell of clutch suspect it slipping does anyone else suffer from this or should i consider a better clutch? whats the next option as i dont want to go paddle, also genral hard driving the clutch is fine
mellinator 08 June 2008, 11:14 its your clutch mate.
Its normal to get that smell when your launching.
You have got to remember that you have 4 wheels trying to dig into the ground under hard revs.
I learnt the hard way and went through an evo clutch in 4 weeks!!!!
scoobyluke23 08 June 2008, 11:18 thats what i was thinking but didnt know what the next option was i dont want a paddle clutch as there a pain in the back side cheers mellinator
reiddo 08 June 2008, 15:25 I sometimes get the same in my bugeye STI. I found it was because i wasn't being ruthless enough when dumping the clutch at high revs (ie above 4000). But the other problem I had was if I dumped the clutch when the revs were too low (ie below 4000) the engine completely lost power and a fiesta 1.1 could beat me off the line! So the only way round that was to slip the clutch. catch 22 or what :brickwall
jd5217 09 June 2008, 11:58 exedy organic clutch is a good upgrade, mine has been in for a year and attended 4 drag meets, last 2 at approx 450bhp and starting to suffer now when launching at 6000rpm & 1.3bar!!!
The rookie 09 June 2008, 14:17 The subaru clutches are relatively small diameter and don't have much heat capacity, the key to a good launch is keeping the clutch slip at just the right amiunt to get it rolling without dropping the rpm into the offboost area versus slipping it to much and overheating it so it keeps slipping, the larger the turbo, the harder this is, having peak boost at 1900rpm is a big help!

K18LLR 09 June 2008, 17:14 rev the car more and dump the clutch in a fast motion, if it slips and smells its because ur not dumping the clutch quick enough!

or too much power :norty:

Yep the drawback of small displacement, fairly large turbo charger and 4wd.
You don't see many top level 4wd drag cars for a reason ;)
An alternative would be to use nitrous off the line, this way you could have the nitrous take up the slack off boost so ultimately get a better launch but less brutal.
when you sort your clutch out, you will be asking how to stop all 4 wheels spinning on the line :)

try 888's :norty:
scoobyluke23 11 June 2008, 20:48 ill look at the upgrade option but idont want anything that makes the car a nightmare todrive ie a realy heavy clutch pedal
reiddo 11 June 2008, 21:12 I was considering the AP Racing organic clutch. It says suitable for everyday use :wonder:
Advanced Engine and tuning Products for your Subaru Impreza, Turbo, WRX, STi or P1 (http://www.powerengineering.co.uk/acatalog/subaru_products_advengine.htm#ClutchesAPRacing)
Anyone any thoughts on it?

scoobyluke23 11 June 2008, 21:16 iv just been looking at the scoobyclinic 500 clutch with maybe the lightend flywheel?
im running the ap organic clutch with a ACT prolite fltwheel (4.3kg)
and it is good for every day to day driving, think i have only stalled it 2-3 time in the last 6 months, normally reversing lol
scoobyluke23 12 June 2008, 17:52 daone, how do you find it now yourve got a lightend flywheel any diffrent?
i find it normal to drive now, sometimes you have to give it a little bit more of a rev when pulling away, but soon get use to it.
worth doing
WaltonWRX 16 June 2008, 00:49 I copied this guy... Rev Rev Heavy Rev and release clutch, seems to work for me :)

What a plonker: unsecured dog in the bag and driving like that! :brickwall
To say nothing of the fact that that looked like a residental road with a 30mph speed limit: that kind of stunt gives us all a bad name!

Agreed but the the launch is a good'un, poor dog tho :freak3:
T.McRally 25 June 2008, 09:52 I went from stock clutch to organic upgrade to ceramic button clutch. The best was the organic upgrade but it did smell sometimes thats why I went to the ceramic clutch. but it lasted around a hundred 5500 rpm launches and about 12000 miles.
The ceramic clutch works fine no matter how hot it gets but is a bit abrupt when driving normally.
