Hello everyone, i'm a first time poster on this part of the forum ,so please be gentle with me. I received a Nikon D40 a couple of weeks ago as a gift from the wife and i am loving every minute of using it, i never thought i could have taken photos as clear as this and the colours are just fantastic. I am mostly using it set to auto ,but beginning to try some of the manual settings with trial and error :lol1: .Anyway the advice i am really looking for is although the 18-55mm kit lens is giving great results, i would like to have the ability to get things a bit closer. So, what lens would you guys recommend ,bearing in mind it needs a built in motor. i have a budget of around £300 although thats not set in stone ;)
Thanks in advance for your help guys.

Do you want to make tiny things bigger (macro) or things a long way away closer (telephoto)

Doh, i should have made it clear, its a telephoto lens i fancy, being able to zoom in with my compact, i miss not being able to do it with the kit lens on the nikon, although i realise having to change lens isn't ideal it would be handy for some motorsport events i attend.

Hi Ted,
If 200 mm is enough and it may not be depending on exactly how close you want to get. I'd suggest the Nikon AF-S VR DX 55-200mm. It has a built in motor and it's a stabilised lens. Digital Depot are doing it for £169, so well within budget. Alternatively if you spend more than your and get the Nikon AF-S DX VR 18-200mm 3.5-5.6G IF-ED You wont have to change lenses. It's £459
Cheers

Hi,
A co-worker of mine got the 18-200 Sigma OS for his D40X for £300 from KIngsley Photographic on Tottenham Court Road. They felt it was a better lens than the Nikon as it used glass elements not plastic.

200mm isn't enough for most circuit motorsport venues. 300 better and even then its often too short.
