Personally I would go for the Nikon purely because you then have access to a much wider range of lenses and accessories. Plus loads of 2nd hand lenses available for Nikons.

I'm a Canon man so I would recommend looking at the new Canon 450D or the older 400D. Its got more AF points than the Olly or Nikon and this allows off centre tracking of cars or bikes on track - you don't always want the subject dead centre in the frame.

The Nikon D40 / D40X (which has been superceeded by the D60) only has 3 AF points compared to 9 on the Canon which gives greater flexibility when composing your shots. Don't know about the Olympus...

For cars at shows, you'll need an 18-55 lens (in 35mm terms) for cars on track you'll need 70-300.

The D40 (lowest Nikon) is pitched at a slightly lower point than the lowest Canons, and the range is slightly staggered...

The next level up Canon 40D (confusing names!) thanks to a £ 100 cashback offer is actually cheaper than the base 450D model - worth careful consideration as its a very very good camera and will do everything you'll throw at it.

Yup good advice. Either Nikon or Canon are a better choice than the Olympus for range of lenses and accessories offered by both.

Why don't you look at buying used? I got a Canon 350D with the 18-55 Kit lens, a Sigma 70-300DG Macro lens, a Cokin filter kit and 5 memory cards (2x 512, 2x 1gb, 1x 2gb) for £290 all in.

It's a pretty inexpensive way to get into DSLR, and at least if you don't really take to it, you're not out that much. And you can always shift it on for around the same as you paid for it.
