We're fitting some lovely new oak flooring over the existing floor which is very uneven, and part wood, part stone. We'll be screeding it to get a flat surface and then ply-lining it with either 6mm ply to allow the new planks to be glued, or 12mm ply to allow hidden nailing. If we go for the glue option it will be much quicker saving us some labour costs, but the adhesive which has been recommended is £80 a tub, and we'd need 3 tubs. Does anyone know of a suitable cheaper alternative to THIS (http://www.carpentersofyork.com/cgi-bin/carpo.cgi?Command=ShowAccProduct&db_acid=710). The main benefit I can see is its latex elasticity which will act as a cushioning layer :wonder:
Hi
If you are close to romford there is a floor place that sells similar to this for around £45.
If you need detials i will try and source

Details would be good, even with reasonable postage it could save me quite a few dollars :thumb:
dont bother trying to secret nail the planks down, it WILL lift as the woods moves, we've put miles of oak down with the adhesive, and it works very well, its evil stuff but sticks like 5hit lol
your need a groved trowel, dont put to much down as lay as it will start to dry then you get a skin on top
as you lay each board really work it down back and forth, then push it in to its tongue and grove, the adhesive we used looked and smelt just like gripfill but in tubs
mark
out of interest is it 100% oak flooring or an oak veneer flooring? I'v seen plenty 16mm oak veneered flooring put down with no fixings at all

our SOLID Oaks now been down about 6/7weeks..
see my psot in this trhread
http://bbs.scoobynet.com/diy-39/672570-went-buy-wood-floor-got-laminate-2.html
bluudy stuff is now expanding... the expansion gaps on the sides have now closed up... and gues what... we have three areas on the floor when its like high air bubbles when you wlk on it.
the shop managers rining me tomorrow and comig out to look at it.
we can't even close the dining room door as its moved, the doors already been fitted twice to allow for the floor hight altering.
this is the second attempt they've to get the floor right too.
TBH, not sure solid oak is the way to go.
whats the oak like thats bonded on that thick ply stuff, does that swell/expand with humidity???

I don't know about the veneered engineered stuff. I had solid beech in my last house layed somewhat amatuerishly by me and that was fine. I was advised to unwrap the packets and leave them in the room where they will be layed for at least three weeks prior to fitting to allow it to aclimatise. This time a pro is fitting it though.
