Photo Competition Round 45 – Long Exposures ......Discussion (Ends 28/5/08)

I like shots where long exposures have been used so it would be good to see what the members of Scoobynet can offer. Typical examples that could be used are waterfalls, rivers, the sea, traffic trails, fairground rides or anything that basically means the shutter is open for a while. They can be daytime or evening shots so get out there and have some fun!

Entries Here (http://bbs.scoobynet.com/photography-360/685305-photo-competition-round-45-long-exposures-entries-only.html)

Discussions only in this thread please.

Rules

1. Image must have been taken within the competition period, which is from Thursday 1st May to Wednesday 28th May 2008
2. No image will be greater than 800 pixels along its longest side.
3. Image overall will not exceed 300kb (defined as 307,200 bytes).

If a submitted image contravenes rules 1 ,2 or 3 could people please mention this in the discussion thread so that the poster can fix it, some advice to the poster about how they might rectify the problem might be handy. No image which breaks any of these rules will be included in the voting thread so let's try to avoid a submission being left out due to not meeting the rules.

4. Each entrant can change their posted image at any time (using edit function) up to the closing date for submissions which is midnight UK local time on Wednesday 28th May 2008.
5. Maximum of three images per entrant.
6. Digital manipulation is allowed in order to correct technical issues. Sharpening, levels, contrast and colour adjustments are allowed as is the cloning out of minor defects.
7. If you feel the need to use other digital tools or effects then these must be fully documented so that people can learn how to use such tools/effects.
8. Image must be hosted so that it appears correctly in the competition thread using something like photobucket or a direct link to the photo if you cannot do this.
9. Image must be titled but not on the image itself, i.e. some bold text naming the image should be posted above it. In addition, to benefit others, please post some details below the pic e.g. EXIF data or just aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, equipment used etc. (this is a learning exercise after all).
10. There will be no posts in the Entries thread other than those for the posting of competition images.
11. There are no judges, only votes from Scoobynet members, their collective decision is final.
12. Voting should be from Thursday 29th May until 8pm Sunday 1st June. Anyone with a Scoobynet log-in will be eligible to vote, not just those submitting pictures.
13. Images will meet the requirements of the ScoobyNet T&Cs
14. Winner gets to choose the theme for the next round.

I hope this topic is OK for people as I was a bit stumped on what I should choose!

Below is an example of what could be used (which I took last year):-

If people aren't too happy on the topic then let me know and I'll think of something else.

A very focused topic, but with a wide variety of subjects to tackle.

Congrats on winning the last comp, SW

What's the criteria for 'long' :wonder:

Is it just long enough for the subject to be intentionally blurred?

I'm just trying to think of subjects that be taken in natural daylight, such as waterfalls, where you only need to get down to 10ths of a second to capture quite a bit of movement. It's a bit dull and grey today but I can still see the ND4 & Polariser being required to slow things down a bit.

I assume something like this would also count?

Dave - yeah absolutely.

Charlie - anything that means the shutter is open for longer than normal and would give you some sort of blurred/motion affect. So using the ND4 would be ideal.

I chose this topic as I've got an ND8 and I need to work out how to use it! :D

Like the Fairground example scott :)

Might have to enter this one. Need to read up a bit more on exposure though as a bit new to it all.

Ok,

Got one up that just makes the timeline. Taken on 1 May at around 9 pm. Wacky weather up there - snow on the mountains and hailstorms last week, 23 degrees showing yesterday (and a lot less snow!)

20 second exposure made the loch very smooth - there was a pronounced ripple over the surface.

Off to capture something more dynamic for a second entry :)

That is a nice entry Devildog - the water just doesn't look real because of the shutter time. Nice reflection in there as well (reflection was my other thought of a topic).:thumb:

Absolutely :thumb:

Plenty of things I've used as stable platforms. Walls, fences, the car, tables, books, rocks, etc, etc.

Or if your subject is moving fast enough, you'll get the blurred effect with a reasonale shutter speed for hand holding

Yeah I did think of the table idea after I posted that. I have an idea for one I will try out tonight hopefully unless its still raining.

That lightning shot is good! Looks like an early contender for the win already!

I've got some ideas bubbling away and I've practiced one idea already which just needs some fine tuning. Off to a local fair tonight so we'll see what we can find down there.

This is along the lines of one I'm going to submit! :D Got possibly two in mind and working on a third but the shot I have in mind is just not happening for me at the moment! :(

Wow that one went quick  I've not had the time to take anything relevant to this, but I would have struggled to come up with anything on par with some of those images. Great work folks :thumb:

And yet again I am a useless piece of sh*t, not even getting the camera out of the bag thesedays

However I am about to start a new job in a few weeks, some of which will entail some heights & climbing, and a bit more further afield than Liverpool, so I shall start taking my camera with me to see what kind of stuff I can capture (inbetween working of course ;) )
