Default sti type r info?

hi chaps

just thought id join up to get some info on the subaru impreza sti type r model. just wondering how reliable they are in standard to mild tuned spec, and what power is reliable for everyday use and evening/weekend fun driving i currently have a pulsar gtir which is running 410bhp which isnt shy but am deciding wether to get something a tad less extreme but still with some go.

are the red top engines stronger than the normal lumps? what do they have different? and how strong are the gearbox's? common weaknesse's? have heard that scoob engines are known for being weak..

thanks alot - dan

The type R engines and gear boxes are very strong and reliable if looked after properly. With a remap, and mild mods the type R will run 350+hp easily.

I had one for a couple of years and even though I'm after another scoob, I keep thinking of getting another R

Didn't type r's have the same internals as other sti's of the same year?

Pretty sure Type R's had same forged internals as other STi's.

It does have the DCCD and the stiffer 2 door chassis though. Also more rear bias than other models...

Standard internals will see 350, which the transmission will handle.

Standard guise I believe they are 280, and should be pretty reliable as long as run on SUL with octane booster or remapped for UK fuel. Same as most cars those - maintain properly and show some mechanical sympathy and no problems.

Cracking cars, V3/4 are a little 'harder' than the other models... if you get a V5/6, look out for the V Limited for a longer 5th gear for nicer cruising speeds.

Some pictures as requested...

Personally, I think the Type R is the best model made... but then I would !

If it wasn't for wanting a newer scooby i would of purchased another Type R, Awesome Car! mine was standard and still beat all the tuned bugeyes on the 1/4 mile. Got a 320bhp sti03 but still miss my type r, had it for nearly 2years and it never gave me any bother

You won't be disappointed if you buy 1
