View Full Version : Which Infinity speakers?
rickya 01 April 2008, 18:49 Apologies as similar questions have been asked before but I am still a little confused & do not too much about ICE.
Just put my old Alpine Head Unit in which is quite a good one with preouts & sub-controller. (I have a JBL Gto massive & heavy amp lying around as well as a small Alpine V12 amp). Have a Hawkeye Spec C & do not want to add weight with subs & big amps etc, (done that before).
I was thinking of just replacing the front door speakers to give a louder better quality sound without distortion that the std Impreza speakers are giving. I would rather not add rear shelf speakers & an amp (especailly not the larger JBL one though could add the smaller Alpine one?) & wanted to know if just 2 front Infinity speakers running of the head unit will be ok. In deciding which Infinity I am thinking the biggest possible is 6.5" & I want bass/mid/& tweeter & dont want to spend an arm & a leg!
Anyone know which Infinity speakers (or other brand) will suit my needs??
Any help appreciated, thanks.
Microstar 01 April 2008, 20:16 If you want component ('splits') speakers (seperate tweeter unit) then there is the Infinity Reference series. The latest 6-1/2" system is the 6020CS (costs around £60-70) or you can still get the older 6010CS model for about £40 on Ebay.
JBL is the same company as Infinity (both brands of Harman Kardon) and their GTO series look very similar to the Infinities (I suspect they come out of the same factory in China, with a different sticker on them). You can get the 6-1/2" GTO607 for about £50.
escott 01 April 2008, 21:28 Depends on your budget. I went for the Infinity 6020cs, but am thinking about changing them as I find the tweeter a bit harsh. I've got an Alpine 9887r, and also an Alpine SWE-1000 powered sub - this fits under the drivers seat and does a nice job of filling in bass below the Infinity's. Next job is to amp the fronts.
I would also look at Rainbow, MB Quart, DLS, JL, and there are probably some other good options. Infinity also do the Kappa which is supposed to be better than the reference.
And whatever you choose - use sound deadening in the front doors, although this can get heavy so you might not be happy doing it in the Spec C. If you don't, you won't get the full benefit of the new speakers.
rickya 01 April 2008, 21:33 Thanks chaps :)
I would prefer a more bass/deeper sound than a clearer trebble sound as some components may give.
Iv found these on eaby but have'nt a clue which one is better etc??

olliecampbell 03 April 2008, 00:30 escott, I found the same with the tweeters, have you used the -3db option on the crossovers?
Good tip about the sound deadening, havent done that yet. Any pics?
escott 03 April 2008, 18:45 Yeah, have it set to -3. To be honest it's not bad, I just think that now I know a bit more there are better speakers for my tastes.
Haven't got pics of mine but do a search, I remember a few good ones on here, someone did the entire door! Maybe in the sticky.
olliecampbell 04 April 2008, 12:02 Hi escott,
Ive splashed out and have all of mine running through a couple of amps, which means I get to tune the sound to my liking. I didn find angling the tweeters in a different direction made a massive difference.
escott 04 April 2008, 15:08 Yes, you're right, placing tweeters somewhere like the A-pillar and firing across the dash is supposed to amke a big difference. I like to keep the car looking pretty standard though.
olliecampbell 04 April 2008, 18:42 Me too...I even re-tango'd mine!
Just about to try and hide my tweeters a little by mounting them into the triangles behind the wing mirrors. Have also seen them mounted in the little side window vents on the corners of the dash.

???BUMP
escott 10 April 2008, 13:42 If you are not going for components, then out of those, the first ones - Kappas.
rickya 11 April 2008, 20:33 Right done it, just drove down to Car Audio Security in Hayes & picked up following, plus ordered speaker mounts from ebay :) They had a nice blob eye Sti in black, Kenwood display car in their showroom with every ICE product in it! Though they were quite interested in seeing my Sepc C outside. Even caught a young lad in his Evo 8 GT eyeing up mu Blitz Nur Spec exhaust ;)
Got these for £42 after quoting Ebay price

Got some Max mat sound deading for £20 from them also
And got these speaker mounts from ebay

scooby-tc 11 April 2008, 20:46 Here is what i did in my 05 Spec C and believe me the weight increase is minimal :thumb:
Here is a quick guide to what i did in my Blobeye. Now you obviously wont install the exact same setup as me but mine does have sensational sound quality and balance with massive midrange and bass
Firstly i removed the standard things they call speakers
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/scoobyTC/DSC04446.jpg
Then i fully dynamatted the doors and made up 18mm thick MDF spacers
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/scoobyTC/DSC04444.jpg
then i fitted a set of Focal 165K2P component speakers
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/scoobyTC/DSC04448.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/scoobyTC/DSC04447.jpg
Then came the build for the subwoofers which comprised of a fibreglass enclosure built into a false floor behind the passenger front seat, dynamatted floor. The subs are JL8w3 and everything is powered by a JL 300/4 amplifier
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/scoobyTC/DSC04668.jpg
covered
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/scoobyTC/DSC04667.jpg
and the system was finished off with a Kenwood DDX7029 headunit
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/scoobyTC/DSC04451.jpg
might be of interest, might not but i thought id share my experiences :thumb:
rickya 11 April 2008, 21:12 Excellent, very stealth & not too intrusive or heavy system!
I may copy you at some point, in terms of small subs & amp under seat, thanks ;)
scooby-tc 11 April 2008, 21:21 The subs are only 8" but pack one hell of a punch.Granted it does restrict the legroom a touch but i rarely carry passengers so don't care :thumb:
