My son, soon to be 18 and then with 1 year NCB would dearly love a reasonable performance car of the hot hatch variety. Any thoughts on where he can get insurance that is not way OTT.He currently pays £1000 TPF for a polo 1.3S.
I see lots of young lads driving "warm" cars. How the hell do they manage.
Prefer he has own insurance as opposed to through mine.
Any help appreciated.

 

Dave, you could try Admiral, or give Tom at Schofield (he posts on here as *Rum a call. I'm sure he could help.

You'll probably find that tpft is not much cheaper than fully comp, and sometimes it costs as much to insure old as it does new.

Might also help to ask what cars the insurers are happy with.

When I was your sons age all those years ago......I'm 24 now...I would buy a car mag like Max Power and just phone all the companies at the back in the insurance section.

All the young lads you see in warm hatches most likely have bought the car and got a years free insurance.

This opens another option. You could buy a new car (if he can afford) like a Saxo VTR and get the years free insurance. This would normally cost your son about £1000. This would ofset the first years depreciation plus providing you dont make a claim the insurance company (Direct Line I think) will give you the equivilent of 2 or more years NCB. Maybe worth looking into.

I bought a Pug 106 Quiksilver when I was 19, it came with one years free insurance which was cool at the time, the next year I paid £1000 on it and last month is cost me £560 , so it's coming down but not rapidly, I'm female which helps with insurance.

I am almost 20 and driving a Vauxhall Nova to save money towards to scooby. My insurance last year was £980 TPFT and this year it has dropped to around £550.

I thought that the free insurance deals did not give you a year's NCB at the end. I was told that no discount was given.

I got a years ncb with my free insurance. Where did you hear that it didn't count?

 

A friend bought a saxo vtr 2 years ago. Stayed claim free for the 2 years. Direct Line (I think) gave him 4 years NCB.

 

I was looking at getting a Vauxhall Corsa about a year back and when I spoke to a dealer over the phone he said that certain conditions applied (age, location etc.) and that if I did stay claim free for a year the insurance is not transferable. That was the only reason I was going buy the car because my insurance was £980 TFPT last year.
