Thanks to the help of the people in this forum, I fitted the KCA-IP500 adaptor to the OE stereo (MY07 WRX) and can listen to mp3's now. The only problem is that the OE stereo doesn't support CD text.

Do you mean you basically select Aux from the headunit and completely control the ipod from it wheel? So just using the headunit as an amp and charger?

What settings have you got on the KCA Ip500? There are two small dil switches on the unit.

I fitted one of these to my 06WRX, really easy to do. I have left my ipod in the dash just by the gearchange so it's quite easy to get at but it's not obvious that its installed.

The headunit just sees it as a cd changer and will either play the entire collection or you can flick through the playlists.

I no longer have any cds in the car

So can you control The ipod through the stereo then i.e change tracks etc, or do you have to use the controls on the Ipod?

Bungleaio, how can you select playlists from the stereo?
I haven't created any so not sure if this is possible.
Also how do you have the dip switches in the KCA-IP500 to be able to select playlists?
For normal play operation (without playlists) it doesn't make a difference which way I have the dip switches set. The only drawback is that the stereo doesn't display the song title. Yes you can change songs from the stereo, not from the ipod (when connected).
Could you post a pic of your install?

Chris.F.> You need the KCA-IP500 adaptor that plugs into the CD changer port of the OE stereo at the back. Then just press the CD button on the stereo for a couple of seconds and you can play music from the ipod.

I haven't used my ipod for ages, its a 3rd gen 40gb model. I just gave it a full charge and connected it up. The playlists i must have created through Itunes. To scroll through the lists you just use buttons 5 and 6, they have an up and down arrow on. The random button works too. I'm not really sure what each playlist is or how it organises them, i really need to plug my ipod into my pc. I am quite impressed on how fast the ipod can send the tunes to the headunit, it only takes a second or so after pressing next. But its a shame the head unit won't display the text, I've heard some great songs that I haven't got a clue what they are!

As for the switches I have no idea how they are sorry mate. I just plugged it all in and it worked so I didn't take much notice of them.

I'll get some photos of how it all looks.

would one of these work ok on a 2003 WRX standard head unit as I thought I needed to change the stereo to get my IPOD to work and this is a far cheaper way of getting it working

Daz - This is the same as my head unit
http://www.coltham.co.uk/DSC00001.JPG

I don't know if yours is different to that easy way to tell would be to pull the headunit out and have a look at the back, if there is a socket that looks like

Then I should imagine it would work. I robbed those images I hope nobody minds.

Fpan - As requested this is how mine looks.

This is where my ipod sits

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r50/Bungleaio/07022008385.jpg

It doesn't interfere with the gear change at all and it doesn't move about, that might have something to do with the rubber case. It's also easy to get to as the gearchange trim is only lightly clipped in. If you've got a decent amount of music on the ipod its not very often that you actually need to get to it anyway.

This is where I have located the control box

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r50/Bungleaio/07022008389.jpg

it's stuck upside down to the plastic shelf under the headunit/heater control area. Theres loads of space under there and it doesn't seem to get hot so I can't envisage any problems having it there. The only slight issue is the amount of cable associated with the ipod, its well over a meter in length if i remember rightly which can cause a bit of an issue when putting the gear trim back as the cable can get in the way of the back of the ashtray. but a bit of readjustment of where the cables lie sorts it all out.

I was going to put the ipod in the arm rest but that involved cutting rather a large hole in the box so the connector would fit through. Also if some thieving bar steward does brake in hes not very likely to steal a standard headunit or look under the trim for an ipod.

This is how my head unit looks when its running, you can control the playlists using buttons 5 and 6, the random and repeat buttons work, The prog button doesn't appear to do anything. The scan button on the left seems to do something but I'm not entirely sure what.

When there is a CD loaded in the headunit the cd light comes on and it will begin to play, to switch back to the ipod you just hold down the CD button.

Any other questions just ask.

I've got one of these adaptors going spare if anyone wants it for £10 + p&p.
Perfect condition, just don't need it anymore as I changed head units for a single din Pioneer with Ipod control built in.

p.s. On mine I ran the cable to the cubby between the drivers and pax seats. Meant I could get to the Ipod whenever I wanted. You just need to dremel a hole in the bottom of it for the ipod connector to fit through.

Yes it is Chris. Should work with any Newage head unit and Ipod as in the posts above.
Let me know if you want it and we'll sort something out.

Does anyone happen to have any instructions for a novice for removing the HU? DIY is not my strong point.

Thanks!

Thanks!

I followed this guide: ehgp publishing ltd private pages (http://www.ehgp.com/public/impreza_my05_hu_removal/) ;
not difficult if you take your time but watch out those plastics of the centre console, they scratch really easily.

Hi, i've fitted my connector as per the instructions above but I don't know how to get the HU to select my mp3 player. I tried holding down the CD button but that doesn't do anything. Any more tips?
