Default ja warehouse turbos fake or real?

just been looking at a gt30 hybrid from ja warehouse and it looks rubish.

the anti purge holes in the 4" inlet are all closed i thought thay were ment to all be open like my gt2082r. the casting says garrett but looks rough.

anyone had any experiance from this company.

from turbos I have seen from China.. it seems a complete carbon copy but they don't appear to go through the same quality control and balancing and testing process other turbo manufactures do.. seen a td05 20g make less power than a genuine td05 16g for example.. hence some work and lots don't work as well as the original.. imho of course..

i understand know so a complete waste of time. why are thay putting garrett housings on tho?
if the turbos arnt that good then garrett wouldnt want to put there name to them.

also the one i have seen has the anti purge housing with the 4 slits in the 4" inlet. but there not open its just imitation holes in the casting. im guessing that this turbo is usless then and just made to look like a garrett gt,

the complete markings of td turbos I have seen have been copied including serial numbers etc..

It won't be a garrett housing but a copy.

The anti surge holes don't go right through on the genuine either.. they just create different airflow to help etc..
the housing if the same without, but with no insert..

Was told by a very well respected source to avoid as they are modified diesel turbos. They will work fine but will not last and dont boost as well as the proper mitsubishi turbos.

Rather than buy a turbo from them I bought a compressor wheel. Compared to the genuine item I would say the JAW copy was of poor quality.
As far as I know the turbo subsequently receiving this wheel never broke eggs with a stick. (A careless mechanic had left nuts or screws in the inlet tract and goosed the compressor wheel.)
The certificate of conformity was from Taiwan and I am not aware they are using a China manufacturing plant.
I know of two very poor performing TD05-06-20Gs from JAW but I know of one TD05 18G that came from there and does nearly 360 bhp and is not stressed. I also had a phonecall from someone whose judgement I respect, telling me that he had just come across a JAW 05 18G that performed well. It was also for very little money.
Personally I don't want to risk my time on fitting one of their products, mapping it and then having to take it off and replace it with further mapping time and I would not want to palm it off on someone without telling them where it came from, although it is obvious on the 05-06 20G that it is not the genuine article.
if you are a gambler I guess you could try the 05 18G.

I have one of their 'big' 16g turbo's, been on for the last 18 months with no problems at all.

People should also check just what turbo they are buying in the UK. I've certainly come across UK companies offering the copy turbos as genuine.

I've mapped a few that customers have bought themselves and I think Scoobylee was maybe one of them ? If it was Lee then this is the only one that I have ever come across that went well ! Maybe you got their development one The issue seems to be the tolerances, or lack of them. I have had some sent here for repair/upgrading to genuine Mhi units and they seem to all be running different clearances ??

Lee : What sort of power are you developing with your 20G?

Generally with supporting mods TD05-06 20 G will run 380-390 bhp and around 350 ft/lbs (subject to boost) on a 2 litre in normal road trim but I am aware of some over 400 bhp up to 444 bhp with methanol.

Can anyone else with JAW 18G or 20G turbos add any further info.

I bought a 20g compressor housing and wheel from them, £120 delivered as i recall, and got my own td05 converted. My turbo was checked over etc and converted, and it did 370bhp and 361 ft/lbs of torque, with supporting mods.
The turbo did quite well and is still going strong, been on my car about 7 months now.
It is a copy housing etc, and when i compared it to a genuine 20g housing it was slightly smaller, so maybe thats why i did'nt hit the 400bhp mark, but i'm quite happy with the results, plus all in, it was alot cheaper to convert my own. Was about £400 as i recall to get it bought and converted.
I myself was a bit dubious at first as i nearly opted for the whole turbo at about £550 + delivery i think, so thought it would be a better option and less expensive to just buy the housing and wheel and see how things worked out.
A better option i feel is to do it the way i did, or in hindsight buy a genuine 20g housing and wheel.

the housing on this turbo is quit rough and not cast very well but i guess you get what you pay for but how come there getting away with making fake turbos and havent been shut down yet because it doesnt sound like a small buisness.

Yes Andy it was mine you mapped, it is still going very well thank you!

Harvey, mine is one of their 'big' 16g's somewhere between the standard 16g & 18g. to be honest ive only had it on one set of rollers and the figure was so optamistic id rather not say.
The IDC peaks at 89% on nismo 550 injectors with the fuel pressure at 3.1bar if that gives you any info.

Thanks for that lee. Were you around 370 bhp or just over?
It may be that their 18G is worth having a go with because it is not a lot of money.
There are always the odd exceptional turbo, Martin Ninnybobs for instance which produces exceptional results.

yes Harvey, not a bad guess that, it came out at just over 370.
Think i may have to put it on another set of rollers as a comparison.

Thats a very good result Lee but as you say you may want a comparison figure.
Whos rollers was that measured on ?
If I remember correctly, your car also spooled up very early for its spec.
What type of tubular headers are you running ?

Andy,

That figure was on Well Lane rollers, thats also why im a little optamistic about it.

I am planning on going somewhere else as a comparison at some point but to be honest its all just figures. The car spools well and makes a very quick roadcar.

As for the headers im still on the megan set (planning on an upgrade once they crack!) they just dont seem to want to give up!

Made in China? From experience with model aero engines, Chinese items are invariably thinly disguised copies of mainly, Japanese engines. The main problems tend to be inconsistancy, caused by poor tolerance maintenance and very questionable materials, often made in "cottage" industries. Some of those turbo's may be fine now, but 10k miles down the road -?????????

Thats the big issue here as I see it John, in the UK we tend to expect consistancy in mechanical components but apparently that does not apply with this particular stuff. I have no way of checking the materials used but I can certainly vouch that the tolerances vary massively from unit to unit.

Regardless of your figures being at Well Lane Lee, I do still recall your car went very well indeed for its spec, so much so that I bought a turbo from the same place for evaluation, lets be kind here and say it wasn't too impressive

If these guys just sorted out their quality control they could gain a lot of business.

Andy,

Ive done 8k miles on this turbo so far, do you think it would be wise to think about an upgrade at somtime in the future?

All this has got me thinking now, am i driving a time bomb?? LOL

If it aint broke, don't fix it I guess you got a good one

In the worst case that it does fail it is unlikely to cause any engine damage, just a bit of cleaning up work.

Just drive it til it breaks, if it does. It might be OK.
