Ok, bit of a rant so bear with me.... I have been with Greenlight since the beginning which was 6 years ago. Always been a great company and always had a competitive renewal price, last year there were others that were slightly cheaper but I stayed with Greenlight as they have always been very helpful.

I swap parts on my car fairly often and all its takes is a quick phone call to say what has changed, that answer I usually get is 'no problem sir we will update our records please fax us through conformation of the modificiation changes'. On the times when it has been a significant power increase I understand that there may be a charge to increase the cover slightly but most times its just the phone call and the fax conformation.

Recently I changed turbo, inlet and manifold - not for more power but to come down in power but have a more driveable car at lower revs, also because some parts needed replacing. So I give them a call and let them know the changes, easy enough I thought...

'That will be £25 sir for administration charges' - You what! :o you want £25 to do what.... phone the insurance provider to let them know the changes and edit my record. 'Yes sir, its a standard charge' ....I wish I could get paid £25 for phone calls I made and for typing this thread.

I have never been charged this before in 6 years and feel quite annoyed that I am charged £25 for letting them know about a few simple changes. £10 may be reasonable but £25? Personally I think its too much. After 6 years and several thousand pounds in premiums I will most certainly be looking for a competitve quote from another company when its renewal time.

Sorry Greenlight, it may be a standard charge but I think its too much. Its a shame you loose a customer over a administation charge after 6 years but so be it.

rant over, sorry.

Hi Hoff,

We are somewhat restricted and will talk generally rather than specifically as in order to adhere to data protection legislation we are unable to overtly discuss your own personal case on a public forum.

When adding modifications, or amending a policy that requires updating or reissue mid term there will usually be a charge for this. Most UK Insurers declare and make charges of this nature, details of which are contained within their respective terms and conditions.

Our advice is always to coincide modifications where possible at the same time to restrict admin charges made, if modifications are carried out at the time of inception or renewal these would be included with the respective transaction (ie New business or Renewal) and would not be subject to an administration charge.

Once added, cover for individual modifications is also on a like for like replacement basis under our modified car schemes.

Our charges are overtly declared, but we do not wish to antagonise a customer due to this situation and are sorry that you feel you can no longer remain a customer of ours due to what is a standard practice across most UK Insurers and Brokers.

You'll find pretty much every insurer will charge an admin fee these days.
I persoanlly use my discretion as to wether i charge or not, but am intitled to charge up to £25.

TBH i think you'll actually find £25 isn't bad at all. I know several direct insurers will now charge £50 for any adjustment. (Even a change of reg)
