View Full Version : New walk around lens for holiday?
stiscooby 20 January 2008, 19:04 I have a 350D with the standard kit lens, I also have a Canon 70-300mm IS zoom lens.
I am planning on going to Mexico in May so will be using my camera for the normal holiday type of pics.
I doubt I will need my 300mm lens as it will be more scenery type of shots I guess I will be taking, should I be ok with the standard kit lens (wide enough??) or would I be better off getting another lens?
Should I buy another one my budget would be around the £200 mark, not too much more that that if I can help it.
What would you all suggest/recommend?
Thanks

Good Lens, and reasonably priced, and also has Image Stabilsation, and will wide enough for reasonable Wide Angle shots
stiscooby 21 January 2008, 01:05 That lens seems to be over £300 so bit over my budget.
What about the Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4.5 DC Macro lens? anyone used/own one of these?
Pumpkin 21 January 2008, 10:44 why not, and this may be a controversial reply, take both your current lenses? Your 18-55 will be fine for most things, and if you need more, just swap over the lens. Saves buying another cheap and cheerful lens.
Instead, buy some more memory cards and an extra battery.
Sbradley 21 January 2008, 11:15 Or, and this might be more controversial still, use the money to buy a decent compact that's easier to carry everywhere, attracts less attention and also allows you to, for example, shoot video as well (great for dolphins and stuff like that).
We took my wife's 6 MP Exlim last year and left my Nikon at home. I think I missed the DSLR once, the rest of the time I was, frankly, glad to be without the weight and worry...
SB
Hoppy 21 January 2008, 16:38 Depends on what type of hoiliday you're on. For me, wife lies in sun while I take a hire car and go on a picture hunt. So the SLR goes with me, plus three lenses.
But I also have a compact, for precisely the reaons SB outlines. For your budget, you could get a very capable little machine and not miss much.
As for the SLR option, I don't think you will have much trouble working around the gap from 55mm to 70mm. But I'd seriously consider a wide-angle in the 10-20mm-ish range.
Richard.
stiscooby 21 January 2008, 22:47 I don't mind taking the 350D with both lenses as the girl friend will have her smaller point and shot anyway, should I not want to take mine with me on a particular day etc.
The reason I was thinking of getting another lens was for a wider shot as opposed to bridging the gap between my current two lenses.

That's the opposite of your OP
You'll need to buy from Hong Kong or the like to get anything within your budget, eg Sigma, but if you can stretch a bit, the Canon EF-S 10-22mm is excellent.

Lol, i see what you mean :D didn't explain myself very well in my first post. Now edited to say "wide enough" as being my reason for considering another lens, sorry for my rather confusing question(s) :)
WRX_Dazza 29 January 2008, 18:46 get a rucksack type bag (if you havent got one) and take the lot with you.
thats what i do and never once said "i wish i left my camera at home"
plus you can fit grub / compass / maps etc in bag too !!!
