View Full Version : 97 UK Turbo - looking for 280-300bhp - any advice welcome!
scoobyjas 19 January 2008, 16:39 Hi Guys
I've had a 97 uk turbo for about 6 months and i've loved every second of it, but it needs more power to match the handling, i'm sure loads of you have been there and done it so i am looking for some advice on getting 280-300 bhp? The car is very lightly modified as follows:
- Prodrive WR sport backbox
- Bailey Dump Valve
- Green Cotton Panel Filter
I have just ordered a Tornado decat downpipe and a decat centre pipe which hopefully is a good start and gives me a full system, after that i was planning on fitting a greedy profech b boost controller and boost gauge. Does anyone know how much i could expect from this setup if it ran just under the fuel cut off? I'll probably uprate the fuel pump but i want to keep everything else as standard as possible.
Also does anyone know how how much fitting better brake pads such as ferodo DS2500 will improve the braking as its a bit of a joke at the moment with 2 pot calipers and standard pads (loads of fade!) If anyone has a set of 4 pots i may be interested...
Thanks very much for any help/advice!
Jason
hux309 20 January 2008, 11:04 Well most from what ive seen manage 280-290 with a good decat exhaust system and the esl chip from scott.t at polar which raises boost to 1.1bar and also makes the car a better drive.
I would highly advise 4 pots for the scoob, 2 pots tbh are rather shocking and even more so if you plan on upping the power.

RLE 20 January 2008, 14:15 Agree 4 pots essential...................
I started modding mine with the standard exhaust/ intake mods. Kept the standard TD04 and invested in an aftermarket boost controller and FCD. Boost raised to 1.2 and achieved 292bhp. Later went with the TD05 FE turbo which I got for £250.00; FPR and Apexi PCF ecu mapped by Andy Forrest and had a safe 325 bhp.
I'd personally shy away from the chips myself. Apexi was the best investment I made and can be had second hand for decent money these days. Plus its there for future mods etc.
rs250gpracer 21 January 2008, 00:25 hi i have uk classic turbo 2000 final version also looking for about 300bhp to acheive i am doing/have done the following mods.. what do you think??? possible 300 bhp??
feral racing stainless manifold equal length
de cat downpipe
de cat centre and upgraded back box
k and n pannel filter in standard airbox
walbro 255 fuel pump
then a re map (maybe by prosport using ECUTEK)
300bhp possible??? have just put in exedy organic racing clutch ready for some fun
39,000 miles so far on the car... these cars rule haha i love em upgrading to p1 or sti type r 2 door late this yr but need more power now!!!!

You'll get more response to questions of this nature in the technical section mate.
Short answer, no. You're very unlikely to get 300bhp out of a TD04 turbo, circa 280 much more likely.
Ns04
The rookie 13 February 2008, 17:15 You can't get an ECUTEK or ESL add on for a 97MY, you are currently restricted to an aftermarket ECU such as the APEXi.
You can get about 280bhp out of your TD04, although I think 300 is just possible, it requires so many supporting mods its cheaper to go with a TD05 or VF larger turbo.
Start with a decent exhaust and possibly a decat downpipe (be aware of the illegality issues, especailly if your in Northern constabulary) and a few other tweaks (such as silicon intercooler hose) and either a dawes or MBC for a small boost increase within the stock fuel cut and you will have about 240bhp.

scoobyjas 15 February 2008, 15:30 Just a little update on this thread, i have now had the full decat fitted and she's going on the rollers tomorrow at surrey rolling road. I now have on order:
Greddy profec B II boost controller
Greddy turbo timer
splitfire boost gauge and pod
After these are fitted i will get her back on the dyno and we'll see what happens!
4 pot brakes are definitely next....
morpheous 16 February 2008, 13:34 Just look at this spec it will give you some ideas,td04 will struggle at 280bhp ecu has to be aftermarket as said

scoobyjas 17 February 2008, 14:06 Got her on the rollers yesterday, managed 227bhp with the decat but is running lovely which is the main thing, will update again in a couple of weeks when the boost controller is fitted.
TerzoAlan 19 February 2008, 23:25 Check out AndyForrestPerformance (http://www.andyforrestperformance.co.uk) and look for your car down the left hand side menu for an idea of whats needed for 300bhp.

RB5 Boyo 21 February 2008, 20:30 Hi mate, i have a 1999 RB5 and am currently modding it to hopefully around 350bhp!!
I have the following mods done so far and this will maybe give you bit of an idea:
-full engine rebuild and new clutch
-full blitz nur spec exhaust system
-hayward +scott downpipe
-h+r 50mm lowering springs
-braided brake hoses with racing fluid
-g-reddy boost controller
-fuel pressure regulator
-induction kit
-walbro 255 pump
-new four pot replacement calipers
-drilled discs all round
-blitz boost guage in drivers side air-vent
-haltech aftermarket ECU fitted and mapped
-unequal length headers
-up-pipe
-Autobhan 88 front mounted intercooler
With the above all fitted i made 305bhp and 301lbft of torque at a recent rolling road day, and i wasnt expecting that as i still have the TD04 turbo fitted and standard injectors!!
The rolling road setup seemed to be spot on as well cuz one of the boys with a standard RB320 made 324bhp, and also an 05 blob eye with with the PPP pack made 315 and it was supposed to be 305bhp standard but it did have an exhaust fitted....all these figures seem to add up anyway to say the rollers were spot on!!
Have to get the 740 injectors fitted now along with a TD0518G turbo and i should hopefully reach 350bhp all being well!!:luxhello:
I would definately recommend an aftermarket ECU to you, it totally transformed my car and helped get the best out of the mods i had fitted, an also made the car drive a whole lot better....and the ECU has the added bonus of having anti-lag and launch control just waiting to be used!!:norty: :norty:

scooby350bhp 21 February 2008, 20:44 Hi mate, ive got a 97 uk spec im currently running 290bhp which i had rollin roaded about 4 months ago
mods are
vf28 running standard boost, blitz induction kit, x-s performace equal length manifold and 2 half inch straight through including de-cat, with 5inch cobra bk box
ive got 44cc injectors and 255l pump with apexi ecu being fitted and mapped on monday with Zen so hopefully should get 340 bhp with 1.4 bar boost
scoobyjas 22 February 2008, 10:39 RB5 is your boost controller a profec b II? That what i'm having fitted in a couple of weeks, i've been told 14-15 psi is the highest i should go at this point, bearing in mind its running 227bhp now with the full decat anyone got any ideas what increase i could expect? Thanks again guys

Yep thats the one lad.
I didnt do the whole lot i mentioned above in one go, the first time i just fitted a dump valve and h+s openmouth downpipe and full blitz nur spec and that made the car rev a whole lot better and felt much more responsive.
The next time a few months later i fitted the walbro pump, aeromotive fuel pressure regulator, induction kit and boost controller....what a difference that made, high boost set to 1.2 bar, low boost set at 0.9 bar. Car was now much more lively and i the boost was much more noticable!!
Six months later (january 2007) i then fitted the front mount intercooler, headers and up-pipe, and the haltech ECU which removes the MAF sensor. Got the car mapped then on this new ECU with all the bits fitted, and when i went to get the car i couldnt believe the difference:norty: :norty: ....i didnt think i had the same car, piles of power but the thing that amazed me most was the torque the car now had, now pulling right through the revs to around 5500rpm were the td04 began to run out of puff and the power ran out!!
You will see a brave increase with the boost controller fitted but i would say 1.2 bar is high enough at the moment, im still running on 1.2 bar until i get my bigger turbo and injectors next month and then i should be able to get maybe 1.4/1.5 bar with a good remap, but i wanna keep the car safe and reliable so im not gonna screw the boost through the roof!!:lol1:
scoobyjas 12 March 2008, 19:13 Another update on this one guys, unfortunately i have hit my first real snag today and it is a bit of a biggy. I had my car in on Monday to get a brand new greddy boost controller fitted and I got a call from my tuner to say that after messing about with it for ages that it is probably faulty, it is not holding boost at all even at 0 gain and is spiking all over the place! Also the solenoid is really noisy?! i bought it direct from japan via ebay so i think i have learnt my lesson there, it was 1/2 the price of anything in the UK but they will only accept faulty goods for 7 days and i waited 3 weeks to have it fitted!
Does anyone know someone who could try and fix it maybe? I'm afraid i can't confirm whether it is the main unit or the actuator valve which is faulty.
I have now pretty much decided that i want a newer model which can be re-mapped easily for the money i have spent on this one already. i believe the 99/00 models can be remapped so i will look for one of those. I think if i had known when i bought this 97 model that i would be so limited with the tuning options that i wouldn't have bought it, but as my first impreza it has been good fun, reliable and cheap to insure.
Out of interest, has anyone had similar problems with a new EBC? I still can't believe i got a faulty one as i've been planning the mods for ages!
Cheers
Jason
mr terzo 12 March 2008, 22:56 i got 285bhp/290ft/lbs torque using on a 98 terzo
standard tdo4 turbo
fmic
550cc power enterprise injectors
ramair induction kit
japspeed decat + tsl group n centre section and tsl group n backbox
apexi power fc mapped by paul blamire
97-98 car will need a stand alone ecu to get the best out of them
ade_sti 13 March 2008, 20:23 I have 99 plate turbo with 290bhp / 299 ib/ft - ProSports RR last year.
Has sti panel filter
HKS full system sith decat and decat down pipe
blead valve (yes I know!)
Prodrive Performace Pack ECU & intercooler pipe
Standard turbo
Hits 1.3 bar and holds it up to 5,500rpm. And will hit just over 1.4 on a really cold day for a second.
Would like a remp to get rid of the bleed valve - best way to go I recon.
hux309 16 March 2008, 00:06 Since i last posted above ive had the following fitted
Ab88 fmic
induction kit[soon to be apexi]
550cc injectors
Simtek ecu
All mapped by jollygreenmonster aka simon roe
I had problems with the pipes coming off but was able to manage 2-3 runs at 1.2 bar which simon set her rich for the time being just to be safe until i have a remap, probably when i sort out some gt headers.
Even with that the car drives incredibly well, pulls strong and lag isn't really there, spool up was raised to about 2600rpm where before it was 2000rpm but it pulls so strong all the way through the rev range.
Don't bother with the greddy, the simtek has room for two boost maps anyway so does away with the need for one.

Going 4 400bhp 17 March 2008, 23:13 Did you put a front mount on to a TD04?
Is that not a bit much as the turbo is so small??
I know Simon and my car has been to him a few times to be mapped and i hope your happy with your's.
If your lucky ask for a spin in his car, but make sure you have paints on you don't mind getting dirty:lol1:
Have a little look at my scooby as i now am running what you was first after:thumb:
Tidgy 18 March 2008, 14:22 and 550's for under 300bhp? talk about ott lol
don't get y people keep thropwing injectors at there cars when current ones are fine.
Tidgy 18 March 2008, 14:27 and 740's for 350bhp????
im running nearly that on 440's ffs (341bhp), and i still have room to play
dunno who is advising these sizes but they seem to not have a clue
jd5217 18 March 2008, 14:28 got 650cc in mine at 450bhp.

She's an import and so has a td05, spool is about 2600rpm and pulls like a proverbial train, but like i said i had problems with the piping.
I will have her remapped once i sort out some gt headers along with the parallel fuel rail mod.
All running lovely now, even the turbo chatter went on it's own so the recirc dv is back on.
Afraid no one will be riding in his for a while, it got stoved in while on a trackday a few weeks back.
I did however get a ride inside an 800hp skyline, what an animal!! :luvlove:
