CAT 6 or 7 standards have not been finished / approved yet so guess they are guessing what the final standard will been.

Got hold of some CAT 6 cable the other day for the same price as CAT5e

 

I am aware of that, it will be rated CAT7 when it floods onto the market (when?).....

Appraently the speeds are as fast as fibre (and cheaper!)

I wouldn't worry Dunk, this stuff wont be on the market for a while.... even if you did have it, you would need to upgrade your network cards and switches to handle the gigabit transfer speeds......ie. ******* EXPENSIVE!

Think this cable will be suitable for 10Gbps when its released as this speed will _not_ run on Cat5e cable.

From memory CAT 7 cable has each core screened but the plugs for this cable will not be standard RJ45 connectors.

I'm good friends with the Sales Director for Thomas & Betts communications products. They have just launched a CAT5E range called Omni Plus. Cable is sourced from elsewhere. No CAT 7 that I'm aware of, and I had lunch with the director today

I'm sure I would of been bugged to put some in stock if they did have some.

Cat.7 cable is a 4 pair construction with an overall foil and an overall braid. It has been around for a few years now in various guises. It is very good cable and was designed for the Germanic countries who tend to take a very belt-and-braces view of all things technical or engineering based.

It is affectionately known as 'Panza' cable

The quality is generally excellent and the outer jacket is usually Low Smoke Zero Halogen which makes it much safer in a fire than PVC.

All good then? The only drawbacks are installation (as it will be on drums), and connectivity. As previously mentioned there are now specific connectors for this cable but they are all proprietry and expensive.

Ratification of both Cat.6 & 7 is about 11 months away, but they have been saying that for 18 months

I doubt we will ever see floods of Cat.7 in the UK due to price and difficulties with installation.

Cat.5/5E & 6 are all commodity items now, which is sad. Cat. 7 isn't.

If you buy this you will have a 'bomb-proof' network as long as you get it installed correctly (especially the grounding aspects)
