Subaru Working On The New Impreza WRC

The last month of 2007 saw the first test sessions of the new Subaru Impreza WRC car in Warwickshire, UK, with additional shakedown runs over gravel and tarmac surfaces to be conducted soon by drivers Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson.

The 2008 model will not be making its debut on the World Rally Championship circuit for several months yet, however. Although a first appearance at the end of April was often mentioned, a definite date has yet to be decided upon.

"We're delighted to see the car running, and the early results were very positive," declared Richard Taylor, the Subaru World Rally Team's Managing Director. "It's far too early to say when we will use the car competitively for the first time, though."

As is always the case, the first rally participation of any brand new car will only be announced when the team feels confident that reliability and other development issues have been thoroughly worked out.

"We need to get a lot more running time under our belts before we make that kind of decision," explained Taylor, before adding that team personnel also had other crucial things to deal with simultaneously: "At the same time, we still have to retain a focus on the start of the year with the current car."

The 2007 season was not an easy one for Subaru, admitted the team boss. "Times have been tough around here, there's no denying that," he said. "But through all of that, the team in Banbury has been incredible."

Despite the ongoing work on the new 2008 Impreza, early impressions regarding the next Subaru WRC car have already generated good feelings, revealed Taylor: "Morale is great within the team and we're all looking forward to getting the New Year under way."

In other Subaru news, after racing for the team during the latter part of the 2007 season, it has been confirmed that Xevi Pons will not be returning for the 2008 campaign.

If they start the year off in an old car then they won't stand a chance.....again.

Agreed, but i doubt Subaru have any intentions of winning any titles next year. Once the car is used competitively, its harder to make changes/developments to it - its better to spend the time in a testing environment to make sure the car is spot on, then go for the title in 2009. :)

similar to what Citroen did when they introduced the C4. They took a year out to get the car right and then came storming back in. Although they haven't won the manufacturers title with the C4 yet have they?

Exactly - citroen did a fantastic job having a car so competitive at the start of the season. And the only reason they haven't won the manufacturers title is that they've only had one top driver, whereas Ford have two (in my opinion of course ;))

Citreon's success was Peugeot's failure, being both a part of the psa group, with the cost of both teams something had to give after all Loeb being french and the new wrc wrc champ probably had more clout than Gronholme did

As for the new 08 sti, hopefully when introduce it will be on the pace rather than it's getting there, losing and being off the pace is'nt a option !

How much longer will Fuji Heavy Industries keep pumping money in to a losing WRC team?

Now thats a question ?

But I guess if the new car starts winning rallys, and the new car does'nt sell, then we'll see how commited they are ir the revenue stops coming in. I've not seen one new shape impreza on the road yet :wonder:

i work for eddie stobarts and the world rally team runs out of here. i was chatting to the guys who drive the carss to the rallys on friday when they got back from dropping wagons off at italy. as i drive my scooby to work i always end up chatting loads about the rallys with them, anyways they have said the subaru budget is cut to a minimum so they can spend more on the new car and that the rumours in the service area is that the new cr is very good and doing well, here is hoping for a winning start and then put matt wilson in there and have another british champ in a subaru :D
