View Full Version : ADVICE NEEDED PLEASE !
Aly Mac 29 December 2007, 19:58 Hi all, hope that everyone had a good christmas and are all gearing up for a wet new year, inside at least :D , i have a wee problem and i am sure someone could help me by advising me what to do. I am moving house on the 7th January and went out today to get the bike organised, was going to take it out of my garage and put it into a relatives until we get into the new house, i must say i was fairly surprised when it didn`t start but then realised that it has sat in the garage since the tail end of September without so much as a turn of the key, maybe ignorance on my part being a newbie to the biking world expecting it just to turn over no probs. What i am hoping is that the battery has went flat and that if i got a trickle charger for it and charged it for a day or two it would get it up and going again, would this work ???.
Any help is very much appreceiated:thumb:
hutton_d 29 December 2007, 20:24 If the starter doesn't even turn then it's more than likely the battery. Has it got an Alarm? If so that'll flatten it. Try the trickle charger first. The go buy an Optimate or similar and keep it connected all the time. That way you get the alarm set and no flat batteries ...

Aly Mac 29 December 2007, 20:42 Thanks Dave :thumb: it does have an alarm so i take it thats maybe whats happened, i will give it a shot.
Thanks again :thumb:
fbladerrv900 30 December 2007, 00:03 not sure what bike it is, but you could try bump starting it a few times, quick easy fix maybe,
Sbradley 30 December 2007, 01:06 No, it's got an alarm - bump starting it will just get enough juice in to set the alarm off. You need 3 hands to bump it and disarm the alarm when the engine starts turning over. He says, speaking from recent experience (guess who forgot to wire his heated grips so they went off when the ignition did...)

[Davey] 30 December 2007, 12:34 Whack some jumpers on from your car battery.. Start her up and pray the battery still charges :)

That's what I'd do, too. Should be OK if you don't make a habit of it...

Simon you are a bloody god send. I live on a hill and always assumed that I would just jump on my GSXR and coast off down the road if the battery ever failed. I won't now. :)
MarJay 31 December 2007, 11:42 I think you can do some harm to some fuel injected bikes by bumping them with a flat battery... I think the injectors need some power to do their thaing. I have heard tales of bikes running lean and stuff...
Mark.
GROWLER_GRRRR 31 December 2007, 12:09 dont jump start yourt bike with a car battery im sure it will damage the wiring
just take the battery off charge it up or buy a new one there not that much money make sure you dont use a car battery charger there too powerful .
get your self a optimate clap on and forget about it . doddle .
bradders have you got heated grips on that gixer ......?
i thought you were HARD man LOL snow on thursday bring it on .,:thumb:
Sbradley 31 December 2007, 15:35 You *can* start your bike with a car battery and it should be OK. I've done it enough times, especially with Ducatis...
But it's best not to make a habit of it.
Agreed about the car charger, though again if you've got no choice then just don't make a habit of it and take the battery out first in case it splits...
Yep, I've got heated grips. Bollocks to the image - wearing summer gloves all year round is the way to go, and I've got naff all to prove :)
Happy New year - logging off now to go get smashed...

Why? Because its bigger? <snigger>
They are both 12v.. And the bike will only draw the current it requires..

you havent got a scooby doo ( a clue )
its not the volts that damage the wiring its the amp's .
if tuned over for prolonged periods of time the starter can melt .
its not your fault your ........ !
Reef 01 January 2008, 14:03 Is it a Ducati? If it is there renowned for draining battries. if you don't use the bike often get a trickle charger if it:thumb:

Sorry but a circuit will only draw the current it requires (obviously as long as its not shorted)..
Think about it; Your mains supply at home could quite happliy provide WAY more than 13amps if you by-passed the MCB's. And happilly provide up to 13amps with the MCB's without tripping them, so if (as by your logic) 'current' was an energy constant like voltage then all of your appliances with sub 13amp fuses would blow instantly..
Dont want to get all willy wavey but I do actually have a clue what im talking about..
Its PERFECTLY safe to use a 12v car battery to jump start a motorcycle. As for starter motors melting any motor will melt if put under enough stress for a long enough period.

Aly Mac 01 January 2008, 21:50 Thanks for all the replies folks and a happy new year to you all :thumb: , i have as some of you have suggested ordered an optimate which hopefully will be here Thursday or Friday so i will stick it on there for a day or so and see what happens. btw the bike is a 05 zx6r.
Regards
Alasdair
fivetide 02 January 2008, 12:03 Hope it gets sorted. Remember fuel goes off too so if it chugs a bit some fresh fuel might help it out too.
5t.
sv650 03 January 2008, 15:20 if you have got the battery going ok then perhaps think about the fuel...unleaded goes off over time and although may not cause starting probs it may run rough until you get new juice into it.
edit: d'oh...didn't read previous post...
