Hi All

Picked up my 03 STI on sat and is a big step up the power ladder for me. At mo just getting used to the power in a straight line which is quite breathe taking (well for me anyway) just wanted to ask how well do they corner tested the water a bit round some slower bends but what kind of reaction can i expect when there on the limit (understeer)?? Any info would be great.

Lots of understeer which is easy to remove to a great neutral balance.
Takes a bit of getting used to at first.

u sound like u r going about it the right way anyway by starting easy,

The standard car is supple and rides bumps on corners superbly.

So rear adjustable Anti-Roll bar is first to help turn-in to corners.

Then it's a slippery slope totrackday spec.... and bankruptcy :lol1:

I cannot remember how many times I've 'preached' this list, but:

Fast road car that will get you round the bends beyond your belief

Whiteline:
22mm front bar, 24mm rear bar
Camber bolts in 4 corners + ALK
Eibach lowering springs on stock struts

Powestation or similar 'subaru specialist' who actually know what to do alignment and GOOD tyres, ie those that wear out quickly.

That will get you several rungs up the handling ladder and cheaply too.

THEN you can get a bit more serious but also keep much of what you have already bought.

I can vouch for the Whiteline ARB too. I put one on my GT-Four and the change in turn is was amazing. Very well balanced, not much oversteer and I could pretty much think it around corners. Buy one if you're getting to much understeer.

on the understeer subject is this correct if you fit front and back arb s the car will still understeer but higher up in the speed scale .

iv just bought some sti suspension for wrx bugeye and the understeer has halfed just off that however the ride is harsh to say the least , would i change back to soggy wrx suspension no way ! .

Im due to pick up my classic in a week. never driven a scoob so it will be my first drive of one. But i have decided to sort out these issues b4 i pick it up. Its an sti v6 and i have opted for:

whiteline 20mm ARB front
whiteline 22mm ARB rear
anti-lift kit
drop links
diff bolts
sub frame bolt

Now im expecting there to be a little oversteer yes?

I was used to driving a Nissan Silvia S14 running 400+bhp at the rear. Complete drift setup. THATS oversteer.

In my experience of setting up cars for road use and track use coilovers are the only way to go. Tein's are brilliant but a coilover is only as good as the setup that it is given. D2 coilovers are also very good. A good value for money option.

just be carefull if it goes sideways at all. I would say drive it more like a FWD car. If u come off the throttle even slightly when the back end is out it can catch grip instantly, and can take u by surprise the first few times. (I would wait till first totally dry day before u really push it). Also a 4wd car doesnt need a huge amount of opposite lock if it goes sideways, as u would use with a rear drive as uv got the front wheels pulling u straight all the time so just keep them pointing where u want to go with the gas planted. over correction in the steering or suddenly coming off throttle(which will happen when people panic) will result in catchin grip very quickly and then throwin u into oversteer in the other direction usually resulting in alot of pain. lol

Anyway, sorry for the long repetitive message but just thought its something I should tell you, seeing as its something that catches alot of people out, and wouldnt want u crashing ur pride n joy. :)

that happened to me when i was trying to get onto a busy roundabout first gap in traffic foot down, steer in, get scared, foot off, rear swinging out tryed to counter steer and now the car swung wildly the other way. came out red faced but car was fine, needless to say i wont be doing that in a hurry again. defo brown pants moment
