I've just bought an iMac and have been given a copy of CS3 by a friend who is an illustrator. I've got no instructions with it and I haven't the faintest idea what I'm doing BUT I'm very, very keen to learn.
Can someone point me in the best direction to start learning basic (and by God I mean BASIC) Photoshop skills?

There are a few free online video clips for getting started here (http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modPage.asp?ID=419#lynda).
To access the more detailed video tutorials there's a fee.
Adobe also have some tutorials here (http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/).
Google will bring up loads of links for tutorials if you do a search.
Some of the monthly photography mags enclose Photoshop/Elements tips and tricks tutorial CDs. Have a browse in WH Smiths etc.

I bought Scot Kelby's book on how to use CS2, it's excellent. He has done one for CS3 as well.
A quick look, loads of books for CS3. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h_?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=photoshop+cs3&Go.x=15&Go.y=5)
Another invaluable book once you get into PS a bit more is Photoshop Lab Color: The Canyon Conundrum and Other Adventures in the Most Powerful Colorspace (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Photoshop-Lab-Color-Adventures-Colorspace/dp/0321356780/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1196344601&sr=1-1)
I was amazed at what you can achieve.
