I've been checking out some ebay deals for a 400d and there's a seller that sells units that are....

"This product is Canon Refurbished "A CLASS" to BRAND NEW Condition, in factory sealed box, unopened, everything is keeping in the original manufactory status. This Kit is in PERFECT BRAND NEW CONDITION. "

Brand new condition? I assume they are second hand, or returned under warranty and refurbished and offered for sale again?

Should I steer clear?

Thanks

There is a 'Canon outlet' on Ebay, which does sell units that Canon can't, for whatever reason, sell as new. They might be ex-demo units, repairs or whatever. The outlet is run by a company called Digital River, who sell them on Canon's behalf - you're not actually dealing with Canon themselves.

In theory there's no reason why there should be anything wrong with them at all. Many people don't realise that complex products often fail during factory testing and are repaired before even being sold for the first time - so there's no reason to be suspicious of a refurbished unit provided it's been through the same test procedures as a new one.

I have, however, heard mixed reviews of their customer service. Seems that if you get your product and it's OK then all is well and you've got a bargain, but if there is a problem then... well, google for yourself. Things may have changed since I looked for a refurb 1DmkII around this time last year.

If you are looking for a good 400D, then make me an offer ;) I'm tempted to upgrade to a 40D!

Mine is a year old (plus a few weeks), comes with an extra 2 year warranty (bought from local Jessops), 18-55 lens, original box, software CDs, an extra battery (non-Canon) and I can even include a CF card to get you up and running.

I'll just chip and and say that I've bought from the Canon Outlet and they are superb. My old 10D came with everything, manuals, cd's, cables etc. and the camera was in superb condition.

I'd happily buy from then again.
