hi all

I am in the market for a new camera, I am not looking for “the best” more of a good normal family camera that can give good results in a mixture of situation and easy 2 use. I have a budget of around £250 but could probably go up to £300 and I need it before the rally which will be its 1st real test.

As I work at John lewis I would ideally like to buy it from them (12% discount also helps)

if any one could advice from there range it would greatly help… max £300 and simple to use are the 2 main criteria..

thanks 4 any help you can give :thumb:

Read through some of the other 'which compact' threads on here, but to cut it short...

Not looked at the link, but how does the IXUS compare to say the Canon G7 or G9 ?

I think personally I would be more tempted to go for one of those, and probably lean towards the G9

If the 860 is half as good as my Ixus 800, I'd definitely recommend it - provided you understand its limitations, of course. A physically bigger camera should have a bigger lens that lets more light in, and a bigger sensor that can deliver sharper images with lower noise. Only you can decide the trade-off between performance and convenience that you want.

That said, I ended up using the Ixus at the WRC last week after my 1DmkII died; here's a shot taken from a vantage point a few feet from the stage. The car was doing probably about 40mph at this point and, naturally, panning smoothly to follow it was a challenge. But it's possible, and I was amazed at the result:
