My 350D started playing up at the weekend. I'm not sure if it was the cold or something else. Anyway sometimes it would take pictures other times it failed and flashed up error code 99. Without getting the manual out anyone got any idea what that is?

error code 99 is an all purpose general error. It could be due to dirty contacts between body and lens or could be due to the lens being an old Sigma or something like that.

Try an old pencil eraser on the contacts on the lens and camera, and see if that helps
Dont use a biro eraser though

I've had it before when the battery is cold and I have a big, power hungry lens attached. It's a design issue really, but keeping a spare battery in a warm, inside pocket will help a lot.
My camera is showing it right now, but that's because the shutter is completely f*cked. But I'm sure you'd know if that were the problem...

I used to get it quite often on my old 300D, with either Sigma lenses or with any lens anywhere near the end of the runway at East Midlands Airport (Radar interference possibly? :wonder: )

The battery can often cause this, dirt on contacts etc.
Switch the camera off, take the battery out, leave for 5 mins and replace the battery. Its not a guaranteed solution but has worked in the past.

I had this problem with my 400d and I ended up sending it back to Canon for repair.
They replaced part of the circuit board. Something to do with the autofocus?
No matter how many times I cleaned or reset the camera as soon as you pressed the shutter release button, err99.
