Hi All, (hope this thread is in the appropriate place).

A group of us have regularly done an annual pilgrimage to the RAC/NetworkQ/whatever over the last *cough* years, culminating in us returning yesterday from the Roger Albert Clark Rally (can recommend it to anyone who likes Escorts/Chevettes etc sliding around classic stages!!).

Whilst we were quenching our massive beer thirsts in the evening, we discussed doing something a bit different next year. We wanted an event that was pretty 'open' in the entry and used spectacular stages but preferably not abroad, (trying to keep cost down). It also had to have some classic RWD action!

Mull seemed to fit the above - plenty of ex-WRC machinery rubbing shoulders with 6R4, mk11 Escort etc etc.

Can anyone give us some tips please? We know there is a 'bookable' sailing from Oban and a cheaper non-bookable option along the mainland coastline nearby, but what about;

- Accommodation (beer critical :D )
- Viewing
- Good places to spec

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Not speaking as an expert on all the aspects of the event here, but Mull is an island. Therefore anybody visiting for the Tour of Mull needs accomodation on the island. The "well, we can stay a bit further from the event and just need to get up a bit earlier in the morning so we can drive to the stage" option doesn't apply.

I guess that this means that for next year you need to book around now and that the hotel/B&B people can charge whatever they want as the rooms will be full well in advance of the event.

The Tour of Mull is rightly dubbed "the best little rally in the world" IMHO. The atmosphere is great and the commitment shown on the tight and twisty roads is something to behold. Accommodation is a critical factor, many competitors and marshals/spectators return year after year and the most sought after accommodation is often booked up a year in advance! That said if you book now for October 2008 you should be OK ;)

Tobermory is the biggest town on the island (i.e. about 1000 people) and makes a good base.

Ferries need to be booked if you want to go to Craignure from Oban in the couple of days before the rally, and especially the return journey after the rally.

It's a fantastic place, I'd recommend staying on a couple of days extra after the rally to fully unwind and take a more relaxed trip around the whole island.

Prepare yourself for the most expensive petrol you've ever seen! :o

When me and my mates used to go back in the 1980's we rented a cottage. Salen is a nice central point with a good pub.

Roads are fantastic :thumb::thumb:

As well as the ferry from Oban there is a cheaper alternative from Lochaline to Fishnish on Mull.

Anyone have an idea of the ferry prices, per car/person etc?

CalMac site says £43 return for the car and £5.90 a person - the rally is during the summer season so prices may be higher.

Amazing event - don't expect much sleep!

I went over and watched this event in 2005. Was only over for the 1 night and just slept in the car as the stages ran until 3.30AM so only needed a couple of hours kip before the following days stages. As said above you would be better booking accomodation now if you require it for next year. I would definetly reccomend this raly and am planning to go back next year as well. I remember passing a few campsites/feilds which semmed to have good atmosphere if you're into the camping thing!

Good luck with your plans! :thumb:
