I'd recommend a Canon 400d with kit lens. More upgrade options.

If the mods could move this to the photo forum, there would be plenty of advice there.
Personally stick to Canon or Nikon, the Canon 400D or Nikon D40 would be ideal camera bodies , it comes down to what you require/prepared to spend on lenses

Edit - Just realised that this has already been posted in the photo forum as well

Although the 400D has got some great deals for a bit less you could consider something like a Pentax K10D or Samsung GX10 (same camera). The 18-55 kit lens is much better than the Canon one, and you get a camera with full weathersealing. It depends what you want to use it for really.
In terms of image quality the Pentax/Samsung holds its own even against the much-more expensive 40D in RAW Canon EOS 40D Review: 26. Compared to...: Digital Photography Review (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos40d/page26.asp) but can't compete with the 40D in terms of frame rate or autofocus speed. But then it is half the price.
As Gareth said, what lenses you might need is important, and also what the camera feels like in use - they are all different.

it depends if you want good quality after service when things go wrong. Pentax are the worst. Stick with Canon or Nikon and you can't go wrong.

Canon and Nikon have far better third party support than the Olympus, Sony and Pentax dslr's. They're the market leaders for a reason...

Yup, stick with the big 2 if you are gonna take it any further than the basic package as the others just do not have the range to back up their 'cheap' intro deals.
