Invest in a air staple gun if you plan on doing more rooms with the ply, you won't look back and your knees will thank you later....

Excuse my ignorance but what's the reason for nailing sheets of ply to the existing floorboards? Is it just to make it a bit less flexy?

In this case I would have thought its just to give a smooth uniform surface but it can be a pain if you ever need to gain access to the floor space.

correct, the house is 1911, te floor boardsare all over the place so the ply levels across any dodgy floor boards, also cover the joints that are full of dust.
all the electrics and plumbing has been re newed, so fingers crosed should need t get n the floor space for a long time, if I do the cutting wheel will come out
