View Full Version : best gravel for driveways, cost and where from?
salsa-king 05 November 2007, 20:39 anyone have a gravel driveway?
we have pea gravel down, it rolls everywhere and spills onto the pavement and looks cheap.
So my thinking is go for a bit bigger chipping (15mm?)
what colour looks good on drives?
also got to hink about what it costs.
maybe looking for 10ton, this can be loose tipped if that works out cheaper.
what sort of price per tone should i look at on drivewy gravel?
and where best/cheapest to getit from?
Phil
richardg 06 November 2007, 11:35 used to have one - complete pain in the @rse as it gets everywhere (footwells in cars, shoe soles, plus pavement etc as you've already noted).
personally i wouldn't ever put one in, however we have put "bound" gravel into a few new developments. as long as it really is "bound" and not just gravel brushed over sprayed tar (without being rolled etc), then it can look good and perform well over time.
if you're just looking for a surface, then tamped concrete (easy enough to do it bays), with loose tipped gravel over the top. if you're looking for something to compliment all that work you've just done, then i would consider either bound gravel or blocks (although blocks are not to everyone's tastes, there are so many out there to choose from).

salsa-king 06 November 2007, 18:20 thing is Rich, its a big drive to BLOCK and bond coats need concrete base?

john_s 06 November 2007, 23:38 We have gravel for car parking at work.
We used 20mm clean white limestone; I think it was about £20/tonne.
It does move a little bit, but if you run a roller or wacker plate over it, that holds it pretty firm.
Bakerman 07 November 2007, 09:19 We have 20mm and is fine, I think it cost £20 per tonne which doesn't look a lot in a pile but goes quite far. Our drive is approx 10m x 10m so the cost of block paving it was silly.

Phil,
If you can get it, 20mm crushed granite is the way to go if you must have gravel. It doesn't degrade like many of the others over time, varies in colour from almost white to light gray/pale pink, sparkles in the sunlight and because it is irregularly shaped holds position well.
I can get it bagged for £30 tonne plus vat, bulk for about £20 tonne plus vat, but I'm 2 miles from the quarry.

contact tarmac mancetter (its not that far from us) ask them for a price on 5-20mm reducing granite.
from memory its about £8 per tonne! if you have enough of it. your going to need at least 10 tonne by the look of that drive, maybe more?
the other option is to goto crich quarry and get 5-20 limestone peas, really cheap!! granite is loads better and looks great :thumb:
caperbility 10 November 2007, 14:51 1 ton of gravel should cover about 10 square metres at 50mm deep. Hope that helps:thumb:
salsa-king 10 November 2007, 18:51 is 50mm about te correct depth?
zip106 11 November 2007, 01:10 I've got the pinky shade of 20mm granite. It hardly moves and doesn't even stick in the treads of my All Terrain tyres on the truck :thumb:.
Haven't a clue how much it costs 'cos it was down when the house was renovated before I bought it but it seems the way to go.
Oh, and it's about 100mm deep too, and obviously has excellent drainage.
salsa-king 11 November 2007, 09:15 truck!!??
100mm = 4", that would be way up my blue brick dpc, lol
Nick98 13 November 2007, 01:07 If it helps my drive is 20mm South Cerney gravel. It is special order but most merchants can get it (Jewson etc). It has an advantage over gravel in that the stones are rounded and lock together when laid to help prevent gravel creep and trenching when you drive over it. The builder that laid it said it is the best stuff by far for drives and a few websites I have seen seem to back this up.
If you Google it there are a number of websites that recommend it and a few independant stockists of it (although they tend to be expensive).
My drive is about 120sq m and is laid 3" thick. I park a Toyota Landcruiser on it and two othr cars and it stays put !
Hope it helps
Nick
