Hi,
I want to get a shortwave radio for this years event.

Before I buy one, does anyone know what frequencies are used by the teams etc?? (want to make sure I can hear them!)

Also, any suggested radio models??

Thanks.

I take it you mean a scanner , if you do there are loads of them out there but probley the best value for money one at the minute is the Uniden 3500xlt these are selling for approx £150 and have full coverage as well as close call.
As regards the team freqs these are usually avail nearer the time .

what sort of information can be heard on these scanners/radios?

does anyone one know about the Uniden USC230 "compact race scanner"?

You will hear the teams talking to the drivers and giving the stage times, also if they go off you'll hear that too although if they have serious problems they tend to use the sat phone.

By far the best channel to listen to for info is the WRC TV crew, they miss NOTHING!

The freqs are only available to the teams and organisers and change a little every year so unless you have a friend on the inside the only way you're going to get hold of them is by doing a search on your scanner whilst out on the stages or using a freq counter (or close call on the Uniden) whilst in the service park. It doesn't take long to find them if a) you've read your scanner manual ;) and b) you have a rough idea of where to look :)

So would this one be good enough then?

It says it has the close call feature... I like the idea of being able to get that info while on stage!

Yep, that would appear to cover the VHF highband that you'll need ;) It has alphatags (essential IMHO) and is PC programmable. The close call feature is a bonus too (I use a Watson freq counter which does the same thing).

As mentioned above the Uniden UBC3500XLT is an excellent scanner for the money and covers more frequencies although both have gaps, it depends what else you want to listen to.

I have an AOR AR8200 MK3 (http://www.radioscan.co.uk/AR8200.html) which is my third scanner and by far the best I've ever owned :)

BTW close call will only work if you're close to the transmission ie. in the service park.

Ok, Thanks for that

Looks like i may have to invest...

I'm sure there must be cheaper sports to follow.... haha

Buy one, you won't regret it as it's the only way you'll find out what is happening during the rally unless you have internet access (and a signal!) on your phone. I'd be lost without my scanner :)

Just remember to take your manual out with you on stage :D

True, but then again we are hoping Mikko does the same as last year so a Subaru can get the last point. :D

So the Uniden USC230 is around £100 and the Uniden 3500xlt is around £150. Is it worth paying an extra £50 to get more frequencies? Thinking of buying one just for WRC Events.
