View Full Version : The "magic ton" ....
brickboy 24 September 2007, 10:38 .... still has a sense of occasion on an old bike.
Was out for a ride on the old Suzi triple yesterday, on the local dual carriage, nice & empty so wound it open, just kissed the 100 mark before having to brake.
All the weaving, twitching & wallowing makes it feel much, much faster than it is :)

You can't beat caning something with prehistoric suspension and comedy brakes for getting the heart going properly:thumb:
Was it on the Silky by any chance:) Which way did you hit the ton?
I bottle it every time heading towards Happy Valley, that bend starts looking just a bit too tight on my old CB550:eek:
Have no problem whatsoever banging the scoob round to 105-110 on the same stretch:D
fivetide 24 September 2007, 13:32 What triple? Not a GT380? Used to have one of those! Nae brakes!
5t.
brickboy 24 September 2007, 17:05 @ CrisP -- no, on the dual carriage between Whaley Bridge & Chapel. 3 miles, no junctions ;)
On the Silk Road, coming off the McDonalds roundabout at Hurdsfield, you've gotta hit 90+ by the wooden footbridge, otherwise you don't get a weave on :D
@ 5t, yes, a GT380. Braided hose, Brembo pads, still no brakes :D
fivetide 24 September 2007, 17:07 First bike to have discs i think. Big solid lump though. Mine used to eat clutch cables and drank like a fish!
Exhaust went eventually, it was a nightmare getting another one but it didn't half get some looks.
5t.
brickboy 24 September 2007, 17:13 I've got a Piper 3-1 on standby for when the stock pipes go ... the smaller middle pipes have already lost a baffle or two.
Yes, they're a big lump. Weighs the same as an R1, or a Desmosedici RR. Pity it's only got 37bhp to push it along :D

You managed to hit a ton going from Whaley to Chapel:eek:
That wheezy old smoker's got more go in it than my CB then, I can't get it above 85 there:mad:
That'll all change when my shiny new (to me) cylinder head arrives though:D
I can get up to 90 by the bridge no problem, but that armco starts beckoning as I hit the curve and I just can't stop myself from rolling the throttle back:rolleyes:
brickboy 24 September 2007, 19:50 Well, that IS on the speedo, not on a calibrated speed recording device ;)
It's not that inaccurate tho', probably an honest 95 or so.
Is it a stock head for the 550, or flowed?
CrisPDuk 25 September 2007, 05:57 Either way it's enough to get your licence removed for your own safety:lol1:
The head is currently a stock, low mileage one, that I bought from a guy in the owners club who lives in the States. It's winging it's way to another guy in the States who used to fettle engines for the CB750 race bikes back in the day:cool:
It and a nice camshaft will then make their way across the pond to a place called Rising Sun Restorations in Yorkshire, where they will meet up with my motor and gearbox which will be going there for a full rebuild:D
It's amazing how much money one can save over the course of a year, when you're eating and living well on less than three quid a day:D
Plus, if I don't spend it on the bike MrsD will only blow it on shoes:rolleyes:
brickboy 25 September 2007, 08:16 Woohoo, sounds excellent. You'll have a bit of a sleeper there :D
I'll have to look up Terry Shepherd and get some port work done on the old Suzi to keep up with you :)
CrisPDuk 25 September 2007, 11:58 I'm also contemplating acquiring the front end from a later twin cam CB750 so that I can finally have a chance of experiencing that stopping feeling:eek:
brickboy 25 September 2007, 13:19 Get rid of that bloody awful swinging caliper, too right. Uprated forks would be good to avoid twisting problems when you actually use the brakes too
CrisPDuk 25 September 2007, 15:55 Get rid of that bloody awful swinging caliper, too right. Uprated forks would be good to avoid twisting problems when you actually use the brakes too
Fitting twin discs cures the twisting problem up front, unfortunately they don't seem to do much to alleviate the feeling that it isn't going to stop in time:eek:
There is an upside to having no front brakes though, through necessity I've learned to use the back brake (which is actually very good), to full effect:)
On that last stretch of the C&F as you drop into Macc, I can back it into those corners like I'm Nicky Hayden:cool: It scares the sh!t out of anyone following:lol1:
brickboy 25 September 2007, 16:36 I can't do the backing in thing .... single disc upfront so rather than making the back end light, it just twists the forks and goes all spacky ...
My fave bend on the whole C&F is Rainow curve, going either way ... downhill is especially good 'cos gravity helps the slingshot exit :)
CrisPDuk 25 September 2007, 18:56 A mate of mine spun his car going downhill round there, he ended up sat on the grass on the inside pointing back the way he'd come from, ironically he'd been hooning it trying to impress all the bikers that used to hang out on that corner:lol1:
My favourite curve is the one after it, the tight downhill right around the nursery. I can get the back drifting quite wide into there, and the camber aims you right at the apex:D
brickboy 25 September 2007, 19:21 I do not like that one by the nursery at ALL. Uphill there's broken road surface which makes my forks skip and the bars flutter, and downhill there's the big grassy bank facing you while you wonder if you're gonna stop before you hit it :(
Another fave is the one at Walker Barn, where the Setter Dog pub was, that's a great double apex in either direction :D
CrisPDuk 26 September 2007, 06:19 Yuo big Jessie, that skipping and fluttering is just the bike telling you that it's enjoying itself:lol1:
I find hat whole stretch down from Walker Barn to the 30 sign is great for clearing the cobwebs out, It's been part of my personal post service/repair test route for 15+ years:D
brickboy 26 September 2007, 09:01 Weaving / wallowing I can handle, it's when the wheels start leaving the ground I get nervous ;)
It's be boring with decent suspension & brakes, tho'
CrisPDuk 26 September 2007, 11:47 At least the ride gets smoother when the wheels are off the ground:lol1:
Suspension is for soft feckers, and brakes are for girls:D
GROWLER_GRRRR 29 September 2007, 06:16 i know i speak for the memmbers of the bike section here on scoobie net regarding speeding on public highway its not clever " always sacrifice your positon for safety " :eek2:
:lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:
brickboy 29 September 2007, 13:22 Magic ton = 100 km/h, obviously :)
GROWLER_GRRRR 29 September 2007, 17:40 :thumb: lol :lol1:
CrisPDuk 01 October 2007, 06:15 Magic ton = 100 km/h, obviously :)
Did they really think we meant miles per hour:rolleyes:
As if our knackered old rattle traps could manage that:norty:
