Guys,

Got my DAS training starting Monday

I have been tooling about on a 125 for about 3 months since doing my CBT.

Anyone got any tips for when they get me on the 500 (apart from don't twist the right hand like its a 125 :D ). I think this will be happening on day2 of training.

I'm quite used to my CG125 which I find very easy to ride compared with the school 125 (an old Suzuki) which I used in the CBT. I think they use GS500's as the DAS machines.

Good luck mate. Relax, enjoy it and don't get too hung up on the U-turn.

Also don't panic if you think youve done something wrong on test, I thought I made at least 4 clear mistakes which werent picked up on when I got back to the test centre.

I did mine on a GS500 and it was fine so wouldnt worry too much about the bike. I found it miles easier to ride than the CBT 125.

Cheers

I did mine on a Yamaha 500, and TBH it wasn't any harder to ride than a 125. It was maybe easier.
As a car driver, the general riding wasn't a problem. With a bit of practice the U turn is easy too. Don't go too slow and look where you want to go (that's the most important point) and the bike will go there.
Remember your checks over the shoulders before manoeuvers.

Good luck :thumb:

Here's the good news. Riding a 500cc is a lot easier than riding a 125cc!
Have fun.

Ooops forgot I had posted this :cuckoo:

I passed my DAS and am currently deciding what to buy next.

The obvious candidates are the newbie 600s.....Bandit/Fazer/SV650 etc......

Looking for a fun sporty weekend steed as opposed to a day to day commute......Anyone give me their view ? Budget around the 3K (maybe 4) for the right machine :)

Seriously enjoying thinking about this choice (foook cars........:p )

Guys,

FWIW, my thoughts:-

SV650/ Fraser / Bandir / CBR6 / Thundercat

All good bikes.

The 400s, unless you are small and very short, waste of time, as they are MUCH harder to ride than the above, and you will fidn you will outgrow the 400.

The DAS are usually done on ER5's, which are light, small and easy to use, however, after a week on one of the bikes i mention above, youll be fine and laugh at the fact you were scraed about the ER5 !!!!

Anyhow, my dad has an SV for sale, great for a first bike, cheap as well... so it wont matter to much when you drop it, because trust me, you will !!!!! (im on my 3rd bike and have dropped that at standstill again !!!! gutted!!!!))

Anyways, if you need any info, feel free to PM me...

I passed my DAS, bought a Fazer and nearly stacked it a few times until I got used to it - quick for a first bike, but not that quick.

After a couple of VFRs bought an SV650 - great bike, sporty, nice V-twin thump just don't ride it on the mway as terrible bar vibes.

If I was you I'd go for an SV :thumb:

If you really do want more sport than cruiser i can recommend the ZX6R. That said i've been to europe on it for the last 3 years covering about 3000 miles in a week so you can load it up and cover the miles too if you want!

Bandit etc are great budget bikes but if you aren't going for a commuter type machine a sporty 600 would see you right. On the road it is difficult to use anymore performance than a 600 gives you.

well done fella.

Just go test ride everything you like, and be honest as to which you prefer.

I always bought on what scared me, so that i grew into it, not advise, just my preference.

Hornet 600 or sv650 imho

Phoning up a bike dealer today it seems that the general concensus is they will only let you have a proper test ride if you have had your full lcience for at least 12 months.

SO looks like I am going to have to work out by process of elimination at a stand still :cuckoo:

Better play it safe then and plump for something that at least doesn't get divided reviews..............:Whatever_

Have you got a decent deposit? You could leave a wedge of cash with them...

My ubncle had a debate like this with a dealer once. They wouldn't let him ride the bike and told him "there have been lots of magazine write ups on it"

His response was "well why are you in business at all? Surely if reading about it is exactly the same we should all save ourselves a fortune and just sit on the sofa with a copy of MCN every sunday."

I still say ZX6R by the way :)

I had this exact problem when I passed about a year ago. I plumped for a CBR600F mainly because I was offered one on a good deal. Didnt ride it before hand or anything. I would probably choose something different now to be honest. Its a great laugh and I do enjoy it but I think I would probably be more comfortable on something else.

My advice would be dont spend much and be prepared to change it after a year and a bit of experience.

To be honest as a newbie what are you going to earn from a test ride that you wouldnt be le to get from sitting on it......... the handling, the way it pulls, its chassis ?!?!?!?!?!? Think Not

As a first big bike, SV's , CBR, Hornets, Frasers etc etc, will ALL blow your mind for the first few months..... they will be V.fast to what your used to !

Go to a dealer, sit on them, feet up, see what feells comfortable, move them off the stands (of course ask dealer first!!) see whta is easy for you to "man handle".... then, get the best deal you can get.......

IMHO, having had a fazer as a first bike, then a Thundercat, now a ninja, and ridden an SV (my girlfriends first bike) I'd opt for the SV.

Fast enough, looks cool, easy to ride (will keep you entertained for years!!! and will "grow " with your experiance)...........
